Be warned, this article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian and Grogu! The new film The Mandalorian & Grogu has arrived, and it reveals Grogu has developed a previously unseen Force ability – at least, one he hasn’t used before. While trailers showed Grogu still using the Force, following events in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, the film expands on this. Fans will remember Luke Skywalker appearing in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian to begin Grogu’s training.
Following the events of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett continued Grogu’s Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, who was establishing a new Jedi Temple. However, Grogu unexpectedly chose to stop his Jedi training and return to Din Djarin, wanting to be raised as a Mandalorian. This decision effectively ended Grogu’s journey toward becoming a Jedi and appeared to halt the development of his Force abilities.
Contrary to earlier expectations, Grogu’s Force abilities continued to develop in The Mandalorian season 3. He demonstrated growing power, even creating a protective shield that saved himself, Din Djarin, and Bo-Katan when Moff Gideon perished. Now, The Mandalorian and Grogu has shown that Grogu’s powers have expanded even further, including the use of a rare Force ability previously seen in Star Wars.
Grogu Has The Ability To Calm Animals
Towards the end of the movie, Din Djarin, Grogu, and Rotta team up to battle the main villains: Jabba’s cousins, known as the Twins, and the bounty hunter Embo. Rotta fights the Twins, while Din Djarin takes on Embo. Grogu has the toughest challenge, facing Embo’s large and ferocious wolf-like creature. It seems like an unfair fight, considering the size and power of the beast.
Okay, so there was this totally unexpected moment where Grogu actually calmed down Embo’s beastly sidekick! It turns out he has this ability to connect with and soothe animals using the Force – which was a cool reveal. He actually used it for the first time right then, saving himself from getting hurt. Honestly, I loved it because it kept Grogu feeling like a little kid, but also showed how much his Force powers are developing. It was a really nice bit of storytelling.
Several Jedi Have Exhibited This Ability Before
While Grogu demonstrated this ability for the first time in The Mandalorian and Grogu, connecting with and calming animals – and nature itself – isn’t new to the Star Wars universe. Other Jedi have shown this power before. Ezra Bridger, for example, was particularly skilled with it in Star Wars Rebels, and hints of this ability also appeared in Ahsoka.
Cal Kestis, the main character in the Star Wars video games Jedi: Survivor and Jedi: Fallen Order, has also demonstrated this skill outside of the Star Wars films and TV series.
It’s uncertain if Din Djarin and Grogu will appear in future Star Wars projects. If they do, it’s unclear whether it will be through a movie sequel to The Mandalorian and Grogu or another season of The Mandalorian. Either way, it will be exciting to see Grogu’s Force abilities develop, as fans haven’t had the opportunity to watch a Force-user who isn’t a Jedi and focuses on the light side grow their powers without traditional training.
