Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital may be looking at a string of losses yet again.
Over its many seasons on television, Grey’s Anatomy has featured a lot of character deaths. The show, created by Shonda Rhimes, aims for realism with regular deaths in the Seattle hospital setting, but it’s also known for emotionally impactful farewells to its main characters. While characters like Cristina Yang and Addison Montgomery had relatively peaceful departures, others, including Derek Shepherd, Lexie Grey, George O’Malley, and Mark Sloan, met tragic ends.
The medical drama Grey’s Anatomy began its 2025-2026 season with a major character death: Dr. Monica Beltran died from injuries sustained in a season-ending explosion. This loss deeply affected Amelia, who took time off to cope with her grief. While the show has avoided major character deaths for two seasons, a new trailer suggests that’s about to change.
The trailer for Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 17 (shared by TVPromos) shows a dramatic hour at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, with Nick, Maya, and Owen all facing life-threatening emergencies. Meredith asks Bailey to look after Nick, and Maya is brought into the hospital with serious injuries sustained while on a call. However, the most intense situation involves Owen, who is trapped after a bridge collapses. The preview shows him unconscious in his car as water begins to fill it. You can watch the trailer here:
Given the show’s track record, it’s hard to say whether any of these close calls will lead to a character’s death. Maya’s reappearance is notable because it’s the first time the main show has acknowledged that Station 18 is still operating even after its spin-off series ended. Nick’s situation is also intriguing, given his relationship with Meredith. Plus, Scott Speedman is currently starring in his own show on ABC, RJ Decker, which might be why his role on Grey’s Anatomy could be ending.
While the trailer hinted at multiple characters potentially dying, the biggest shock is likely the fate of Owen Hunt. Kevin McKidd, who has played Owen for almost 20 years, is leaving Grey’s Anatomy, along with Kim Raver (Teddy Altman), at the end of this season. Fans had hoped the show would give them a happy ending after they recently got back together, but the trailer now suggests Owen might actually die.
Viewers will have to wait a bit longer to find out what happens next on Grey’s Anatomy. The ABC show is taking a break mid-season as it prepares for its final episodes.
