I was totally blown away by Takopi’s Original Sin last year! It was the most talked-about anime in Japan, at least according to Google Trends. What really got to me was how powerfully it dealt with really tough subjects – abuse, both physical and emotional – through the eyes of this little nine-year-old girl. And the contrast! This incredibly sweet-looking alien shows up and gets involved in her life, and it’s just… a really haunting, but strangely captivating story. It’s racked up a ton of awards, and honestly, it deserves every one of them.

Takopi’s Original Sin is a raw and honest exploration of trauma, refusing to shy away from difficult emotions or offer easy answers. It’s a challenging but ultimately moving series. This limited anime is adapted from the web manga by Taizan 5, originally published on Shonen Jump+, and you can watch it on Crunchyroll.

The anime series, adapted from a manga by Mokumokuren, is another standout and emotionally resonant story. It centers on Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indo, two teenage friends in the Japanese countryside. Their bond is strained when Yoshiki begins to suspect something has changed with Hikaru.

Stories about the supernatural are captivating, and they often lead us to ask big questions about what it means to be human. For example, does our humanity come from our memories – even if those memories aren’t our own? Or is it the experiences we have that define us? Good news for fans: a second season of The Summer Hikaru Died was announced in late September.

I’ve noticed a real resurgence in interest for Sakamoto Days with the release of Season 2. While many longtime Shonen Jump readers were a bit disappointed with how Season 1 toned down the wild action from the original manga, Season 2 feels much more true to Yuto Suzuki’s vision for the action comedy. Maybe fans are simply appreciating what they’re getting now, especially after waiting for more content.

Season 2 of Sakamoto Days is a significant step up from the first, with a much darker and more serious storyline. It explores Sakamoto Taro’s past as an assassin and the criminal world that still exists after his retirement. The animation and production quality are consistently improving, and many believe this season will be among the best anime releases of 2025.
