Good Omens: Prime Video’s Underrated Fantasy Show

Prime Video offers a wide range of fantasy series, including a particularly excellent show that many consider one of the best of the last ten years. While Prime Video has created several critically acclaimed shows across various genres – some even achieving all-time great status – many other deserving series haven’t received the attention they deserve.

While shows like The Wheel of Time get a lot of attention as Prime Video’s top fantasy offerings, there are other fantastic shows on the platform that don’t get the recognition they deserve. Good Omens, featuring David Tennant and Michael Sheen, is a prime example – it’s a truly excellent show that hasn’t found the widespread success it merits.

Good Omens Is Unlike Other Fantasy TV Shows Of The 2020s

The TV series Good Omens, which premiered on Prime Video in 2019, is based on the 1990 novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The show centers around Crowley and Aziraphale, a demon and an angel who have a long-standing friendship. Crowley was originally an angel but was cast out of Heaven and transformed into a demon.

Crowley and Aziraphale, despite being very different, have a history of working together. In the first season of Good Omens, they team up to locate the Antichrist and stop the end of the world. The second season brings them together again when the amnesiac Archangel Gabriel unexpectedly shows up at Aziraphale’s bookshop.

Good Omens is a funny and fantastical show with dramatic moments and hints of biblical stories, but it’s not focused on religion. What really makes the show special is the fantastic connection between the actors David Tennant and Michael Sheen, which makes it charming, captivating, and adds an intriguing mystery to each season.

Good Omens blends humor and satire to delve into big ideas like what it means to be human, morality, and various philosophies. The show also features a diverse cast of characters – both ordinary people and supernatural beings – each with their own unique viewpoints and backgrounds.

Why Good Omens Became An Underrated Show Despite Its Success

Okay, so as of today, Good Omens is sitting pretty with an 86% rating from critics and a whopping 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Honestly, though, I think it’s still flying under the radar. It’s weird because it’s on Prime Video, has a fantastic cast, and is based on a brilliant book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, but they just haven’t pushed it much in terms of marketing. It should be way more popular than it is!

One of the best parts of Good Omens is its humorous take on religion, but this can also make it hard for new viewers to understand. People unfamiliar with the show’s style might misinterpret it. However, despite not being hugely popular with everyone, Good Omens has gained a dedicated fanbase that’s helped it continue.

Good Omens Will End With Its Third Season (But There’s A Twist)

As a huge fan, I’m really bummed to hear that Good Omens is heading towards its conclusion with season three. It won’t be a full season as we know it, apparently. Season two left us on a total cliffhanger – especially with Crowley and Aziraphale and Aziraphale’s new job here on Earth! I’m desperately curious to see how they’re going to wrap everything up.

Originally, Good Omens was intended to have a full third season. However, those plans changed. While a six-episode season 3 was announced in December 2023, production was halted in 2024 following accusations of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman. Gaiman then announced he was distancing himself from the show as Amazon addressed the situation (according to Deadline).

About two weeks later, Amazon made the decision to end Good Omens with one extended 90-minute episode instead of the originally planned six-episode season 3. The main worry now is whether the finale can successfully wrap up all the planned storylines in just a single, longer episode.

Hopefully, the team behind Good Omens has crafted a satisfying conclusion that ties up any remaining plot points and answers the show’s biggest mysteries. Most of all, fans are eager to see a happy ending for Crowley and Aziraphale.
