Aziz Ansari’s new comedy film is now available digitally after hitting theaters in October. We’re excited to share an exclusive clip from the movie, featuring behind-the-scenes insights from Ansari and Seth Rogen.
In Good Fortune, Gabriel is a low-level guardian angel whose job is to prevent silly accidents. He dreams of doing more meaningful work, like guiding lost souls. When Arj, a man down on his luck after losing his job, catches Gabriel’s attention, the angel decides to intervene. Gabriel attempts to improve Arj’s life by magically switching bodies with Arj’s rich boss, but the plan quickly goes awry.
Aziz Ansari Was “Intimidated” Directing Keanu Reeves
Although Good Fortune isn’t Aziz Ansari’s first film project – his movie Being Mortal, which featured Bill Murray, was cancelled due to concerns about Murray’s behavior on set – it’s the first one he’s actually finished and released. Because of this, he hadn’t had much experience directing established Hollywood actors, making the prospect of directing Keanu Reeves a bit intimidating. Before the film was originally scheduled to come out in October, Ansari explained to MovieWeb:
Being a child of the 90s, I was definitely a bit intimidated at first. He’s a legend, someone I watched growing up, so working with him felt surreal. But I quickly got comfortable. I really admire him, and he was amazing in this movie – he is the heart of it. His performance is both funny and really touching, and I still can’t believe he agreed to collaborate with me.
Not only was Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune well-received as a strong first film, but the comedic talents of Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogen also contributed to positive reviews from both critics and viewers.
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 77% approval rating from critics for the film, with audiences liking it even more at 81%. A positive review in The Independent by Clarisse Loughrey, along with her insightful comparisons to other films, provides a good sense of what to expect.
Good Fortune is a comedy that will appeal to movie lovers, drawing inspiration from classic films like It’s a Wonderful Life, Trading Places, and Wings of Desire, and blending elements from each to create something new.
Although the film earned $22 million at the box office despite costing $30 million to make, its release on digital platforms and streaming services will likely introduce it to a wider audience. It’s a movie that deserves to be seen alongside the major blockbuster and franchise films currently available.
