‘Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’ Villain Should Be Hedorah

The next movie in the popular MonsterVerse franchise will be Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. The series began with the 2014 film Godzilla, and Supernova will be the sixth installment. Following the successful Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released in 2024. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is scheduled for release on March 26, 2027, and early reports suggest a new villain may emerge in the MonsterVerse.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduces new monsters, Shimo and The Skar King, though some viewers weren’t impressed. Previous MonsterVerse films brought back classic villains like King Ghidorah, Rodan, and MechaGodzilla. Now, with the next movie titled Supernova, fans are guessing about a potential space-based threat, with SpaceGodzilla being a popular idea. However, considering how the MonsterVerse builds its interconnected world, Herdorah might actually be a more suitable villain for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

Who Is Hedorah?

Toho

Hedorah first battled Godzilla in the 1971 film, appropriately named Godzilla vs. Hedorah. This alien monster arrived on Earth via a comet and quickly thrived, feeding on pollution which allowed it to grow from microscopic size to a massive creature. Throughout the movie, Hedorah’s shape constantly changes as it consumes more and more, becoming an increasingly dangerous opponent for Godzilla, often outsmarting him. However, Hedorah’s most dangerous weapon was its sulfuric acid, which could burn through Godzilla’s tough skin – a completely new and deadly threat for the Toho monster that fans hadn’t witnessed before. Despite this, Godzilla vs. Hedorah would ultimately be Hedorah’s only significant fight with the iconic kaiju.

The 1971 fight between Godzilla and Hedorah is surprisingly well-known today, even by people who haven’t seen the movie. This is largely due to the scene where Godzilla accidentally blasts himself backwards with his atomic breath, which became a popular meme and GIF. That moment also meant Hedorah, the pollution-eating alien monster, never appeared in another Godzilla film. Although Hedorah fit the franchise’s theme of addressing real-world issues – a theme that inspired Godzilla itself – that one scene determined Hedorah’s fate.

Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka strongly disliked the battle between Godzilla and Hedorah, and effectively ended any possibility of a rematch. Yoshimitsu Banno, the director of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, had envisioned a sequel focusing on environmental pollution, but Tanaka blocked him from directing another Godzilla film, even claiming Banno had “ruined” the franchise. Hedorah briefly reappeared in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, controlled by the Xiliens, before Godzilla quickly defeated him once more.

Is Hedorah Destined for the MonsterVerse?

Toho

The MonsterVerse has proven it can successfully include even challenging monsters, like MechaGodzilla, which means the future sequels have a lot of exciting possibilities. A villain like SpaceGodzilla, who first appeared in 1994, could easily be introduced in a film like Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. In fact, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hints at how SpaceGodzilla might originate, showing Godzilla firing his atomic breath into space. However, Hedorah might be an even better choice, as the monster’s story could connect to current real-world issues and also fit with the ‘Supernova’ theme.

SpaceGodzilla would deliver the big, exciting action fans expect from Godzilla movies. However, Hedorah could give the MonsterVerse a chance to explore the original themes that started it all. The very first Godzilla film was created because of Japan’s worries about nuclear weapons after the war, giving the monster a deeper meaning beyond just being a creature in a movie. Hedorah, who feeds on pollution, would be a great way for the MonsterVerse to connect with those original ideas and address a relevant, real-world problem.

The MonsterVerse films, starting with 2014’s Godzilla, have consistently included relevant social issues. The first film featured creatures that thrived on radiation and linked to nuclear weapons, while Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire touched on climate change with a plot involving a coming ice age. Godzilla vs. Kong also explored the dangers of unchecked corporate power by revealing the origins of MechaGodzilla as a weapon secretly built by a large company. Now, the franchise is looking at using the monster Hedorah to tackle further social topics.

Hedorah could be a terrifying new enemy for Godzilla and Kong, mainly because of its incredibly strong acid, which could seriously injure either of them. Its ability to move through any environment – water, land, and air – constantly raises the stakes and makes it a danger to both the surface world and the Hollow Earth. However, there’s a complication: the upcoming film Godzilla Minus Zero is rumored to include Hedorah in its sequel, and the creative team might avoid using the character twice if those rumors are true.

SpaceGodzilla might be a simple villain for audiences to understand and even rally against, possibly leading to exciting monster battles. However, he doesn’t have much depth. If the new Godzilla x Kong movie wants to capture the spirit of the older films, the filmmakers should strongly consider using Hedorah, a formidable monster who doesn’t get the respect he deserves from fans.
