‘s divisive first-look image has prompted a response from Kratos himself.
The highly anticipated God of War TV series, based on the popular video game created by Santa Monica Studio, is coming to Prime Video. Ryan Hurst will play Kratos, and Callum Vinson will play his son, Atreus. While excitement for the show is strong, a recent first-look image of the father-son duo received a varied reaction from fans online.
Hurst responded to criticism about a God of War image he posted on Instagram, which some people felt didn’t look accurate. He wrote, “Don’t believe everything you see on the internet, kids,” but this comment has actually sparked even more discussion.
Prime Video released the first official image, showing Kratos and Atreus from the upcoming God of War series. The caption announced their journey is beginning, and the image itself seems very official, making one industry commentator’s recent remarks a bit puzzling.
Movie and TV show promotional photos often don’t show what the final product actually looks like. These early images are frequently posed photoshoots, not scenes from the show or movie itself, and are lit to look their best for publicity.
Hurst probably isn’t saying the initial image isn’t real, but rather commenting on what it hints about how the series will look – specifically the lighting, mood, and overall visual style. While the image appears posed and a bit like a costume shoot, the final series might be much darker, more realistic, and closer in tone to the video games.
The upcoming God of War TV series stars Teresa Palmer, Ed Skrein, Mandy Patinkin, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson. While not a direct retelling of any specific game, the show is largely inspired by the 2018 God of War game, which shifted the story’s setting from Ancient Greece to the world of Norse mythology.
The upcoming series centers on Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’s wife. Throughout their travels, Kratos tries to guide Atreus in becoming a worthy god, and Atreus, in turn, tries to help Kratos become a better man. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The God of War video game series is incredibly well-loved and highly praised, so there’s a lot of anticipation for the upcoming show. It’s still unclear how the show will stack up against the games or the initial preview image, but according to Hurst, viewers should probably wait and see before forming an opinion.
