Each autumn, Gilmore Girls consistently ranks among the most-watched shows, thanks to its cozy New England setting and delightful music. This year is particularly special, marking the show’s 25th anniversary and giving fans another reason to revisit Stars Hollow. Recently, Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) and Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) celebrated their iconic series with a reunion at the Emmys last month, even though the show never won an award during its original run. The last time we saw the mother-daughter duo together, in character, was in the final episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, and now, almost ten years later, Lauren Graham is sharing her thoughts on that memorable and often debated closing scene.
I remember being so excited when Netflix brought back Gilmore Girls in 2016 for a four-part revival! But honestly, as a fan, I – along with a lot of others – was really disappointed by those last four words. Some of us are *still* upset about being left hanging and actually try to ignore that final scene! Even now, years later, Variety reports that Graham says she’s still puzzled by how people reacted – the mixed reviews really confused her.
I’m not entirely sure why things changed. I was genuinely enjoying myself. I felt fantastic at work every day, and I thought the work we were doing was excellent and the episodes were truly beautiful.
It was surely fantastic to revisit Stars Hollow with the original actors and creator for filming A Year In The Life, and Lauren Graham was likely just as happy to have her Gilmore family come together last week to celebrate her receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
As a big fan of Gilmore Girls, I agree with what the Mighty Ducks actress said. I felt A Year In The Life was a great way to continue their story, and the whole plot, especially how it ended, nicely wrapped things up. Many other fans feel the same way, and I believe a lot of the criticism came from people being surprised and disappointed by the finale. If viewers had known there would be another season to explain who Rory’s baby’s father is, I think the reaction would have been much more positive.
Even though she wanted to prevent negative feedback on her work, Graham understood that fans react so passionately only because they have a strong connection to Gilmore Girls.
I definitely believe writer Amy Sherman-Palladino had a plan. Generating conversation among fans – even if it’s critical – is essentially free advertising. The conclusion of A Year In The Life is far more striking than the original Gilmore Girls finale, and I suspect that was intentional, designed to keep fans debating the possibilities forever. In my opinion, it’s a truly iconic moment in television – a perfect mic drop.

I don’t really feel we need to know what happens to the Gilmore Girls in the future. It seems obvious to me that Rory will become a single mother, just like Lorelai. The father – I suspect it’s Logan, played by Matt Czuchry – would be somewhat present but unreliable, similar to how Christopher was with Rory. However, this time around, Rory will have her mother, Lorelai, for support.
Despite the show ending, many fans are still hoping for more, and the creator of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the Twinless actress recently offered a small sign of encouragement. Amy Sherman-Palladino has often stated she’d never rule out a return to Gilmore Girls, and Lauren Graham has also expressed her willingness to reprise her role, suggesting that the ending of A Year In The Life might not be a definitive close. A reboot could naturally focus on Rory’s child experiencing her own teenage years, alongside Rory navigating adulthood. I would definitely enjoy that, but currently, there aren’t any confirmed plans for a reboot.
In the meantime, you can relive the cozy feeling of autumn by watching both Gilmore Girls and Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life if you have a Netflix subscription.
