Gillian Anderson Clarifies Talks With Ryan Coogler About X-Files Reboot

Gillian Anderson recently discussed potential future involvement with The X-Files. She had previously spoken with two-time Oscar nominee Ryan Coogler about a new version of the show, but is now clarifying the likelihood of her return. Following a two-season revival, several attempts have been made to relaunch the franchise, starting with an animated series. Chris Carter, the show’s creator, later revealed that Coogler, known for directing Sinners, was working on his own take on the series.

I’ve been following the potential X-Files reboot, and it sounds like Ryan Coogler’s been juggling a lot! His work on a big historical horror film set for 2025 meant the X-Files project had to take a backseat for a while. He’s said he’ll dive back in as soon as he finishes that other movie, Sinners. He gave us an update in October, confirming things were moving forward, and even shared that his mom, a big fan of the original X-Files, has been a real inspiration for the new show. But, frustratingly, he’s still not giving away any hints about who might be starring!

Gillian Anderson recently spoke with ScreenRant about her new Netflix Western, The Abandons, and was asked about the possibility of returning to The X-Files in a potential reboot. She explained that her previous conversations with Ryan Coogler were simply him letting her know he was developing the show, not formal discussions about her involvement. She added that she currently has no idea what the future holds for her character, Scully, in the series.

I haven’t really given that any thought or had any discussions about it. I spoke with Ryan Coogler some time ago, and he mentioned he was working on it, but that’s all I know. I have no idea what the current status is, or even if the project is still happening. Just knowing about it is very different from actively considering it.

Anderson had mentioned speaking with Coogler in May, but didn’t say if it was simply an update about the potential X-Files reboot. At the time, she praised him as “the perfect person” to revive the show, and hinted she might be open to reprising her role as Scully if the creative direction felt right.

While her latest statements don’t go against what she’s said before, they do seem to reflect her feelings about potentially returning to the role after the conclusion of The X-Files season 11. Anderson has consistently maintained she doesn’t want to reprise her role as Scully, believing the character’s storylines had become repetitive and she was looking for something “new and progressive.” She was also worried about being defined by a single character for too long – a concern shared by many actors, including her X-Files co-star David Duchovny, who have appeared in long-running shows.

However, her recent statement doesn’t completely dismiss the possibility of her appearing in Ryan Coogler’s new X-Files series. She’s repeatedly said she’s curious to see his vision for the show. Coogler mentioned in April that he hoped to have both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reprise their roles as Scully and Mulder, and considering how iconic they are to the X-Files, their involvement could be a positive for the reboot.
