The fifth season of Ghosts started with some changes to how people are taken to the afterlife, and it surprisingly mirrors a beloved old supernatural comedy. In the premiere episode, Carol (Caroline Aaron) went to Heaven after selflessly giving her soul to Elias Woodstone (Matt Walsh) to save her ex-husband, Pete (Richie Moriarty), who had originally tried to make the same sacrifice for Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar).
It used to be believed that ghosts could only move on to Heaven once they resolved whatever unfinished business they had while alive – Trevor jokingly called this being ‘sucked off.’ But Carol’s kind act seems to have changed things, suggesting there might be new ways for ghosts to move into the afterlife.
Trevor’s Theory About Getting Sucked Off Echoes The Good Place
In the fifth season of Ghosts, episode 2, Trevor discussed his idea with Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) about how ghosts get accepted into the afterlife. He figured Carol went straight to Heaven because of one incredibly selfless act. Knowing those kinds of opportunities are rare, he wondered if doing a lot of smaller good deeds could eventually add up to the same result.
Trevor wanted to do something nice, so he offered to stay on the phone for Sam (Rose McIver) while she tried to cancel Woodstone’s water delivery. Sas volunteered to help, but Trevor declined, offering to split any reward points they might earn.
As a big movie and TV fan, the whole ‘points’ system in this story immediately reminded me of The Good Place. You know, that show started with this idea that people earned points throughout their lives based on their actions – good deeds got you points towards the Good Place, bad ones sent you the other way. But it wasn’t just doing something good, it had to be genuinely good. If you did something nice just to look good, or with selfish intentions, it didn’t count for anything. It was all about the motivation behind the act.
Even though the point system in The Good Place didn’t last—it was later replaced with a test—it was a central element of the show. When Trevor mentioned points, it clearly echoed this system, and his suggestion that small acts of kindness could lead to great rewards mirrored how characters earned their way into The Good Place.
A fun nod to The Good Place happened when Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) praised Trevor and Sas’ plan, then immediately rushed to tell Sam to answer his own phone. This was a clever reference because Jones previously played John Wheaton on The Good Place, a character who ultimately earned a spot in the afterlife.
Trevor & Sasappis Are TV Junkies Who Surely Know The Show

I have to admit, watching Trevor and Sas is hilarious. They were stuck on hold, waiting for Sam, and got totally bored, so naturally they wanted to watch TV. They’d become proper TV addicts ever since they figured out Sam could turn it on for them! It’s so funny because in Season 5, Episode 2 of Ghosts, Trevor actually said he loved TV, and Sas agreed it was the best – honestly, relatable! They’re completely hooked, and it’s a running joke that just adds to the show’s charm.
Sas and Trevor were far back in line – number 50 – so they slipped away to watch TV, confident they had time before Sam needed to answer the call. While happily heading upstairs to catch their favorite shows, like The Golden Bachelor, Trevor started thinking about the show The Good Place, and it sparked a new idea for him.
This episode of Ghosts definitely felt inspired by The Good Place. The show introduced a new system – a points-based reward for good deeds – which could lead to some funny situations as the ghosts try to earn their way into the afterlife. But if they’re not genuinely trying to be helpful, Trevor’s plan won’t succeed.
If Trevor’s watching The Good Place, he hasn’t probably seen much of it yet, and he’s in for some big surprises with all the unexpected plot twists. He’ll need a really good understanding of the show if he wants to fully appreciate it.
