Season 5 of Ghosts thankfully moved away from a strange storyline, which is great news for characters Sam and Jay. The season began with Jay trying to escape a deal with the mischievous Elias Woodstone. After a surprising turn of events – Pete’s ex-wife, Carol, sacrificed herself to save Jay, finally finding peace – things have become calmer at the Woodstone mansion.
Okay, so in this week’s Ghosts, things get a little… lively. Sam and Jay get a welcome dose of normalcy when some of their city friends rent the house next door, and the ghosts are thrilled to have some living people to bother. But, naturally, things don’t stay peaceful for long. When the renters move a bookcase, it messes with the ghostly realm, and Sam finds herself stuck in the middle, pressured by Thor (Devan Chandler Long) to manipulate her friends into fixing it. It’s another awkward situation for her, and honestly, it’s pretty funny to watch unfold.
Sam Finally Chooses Herself In Ghosts Season 5, Episode 2, “Viking Wedding”
In the episode “Viking Wedding,” Sam faces a familiar dilemma: prioritizing the needs of ghosts over her own happiness. She often puts their needs first, even if it means missing out on experiences with living people. But this time, Sam makes a different choice. To avoid upsetting her friends and ensure she’s invited on their exclusive trips, she decides not to ask them to move a bookcase, even though doing so would have helped the ghosts.
Okay, I was seriously relieved when Sam finally decided to just not push things! It was so awkward because Thor was practically begging her to keep asking about it right there at dinner, and honestly, it was making me cringe. Thankfully, Hetty was there to kind of guide Sam and help her see she didn’t have to do that. It was a smart move to just drop it, and it saved everyone from a really weird situation. As a fan, it was great to see her not fall into that pattern of embarrassing herself again – she’s done that enough times, and it was a real breath of fresh air!
Sam and Jay enjoy helping ghosts, but Sam also needs to focus on her relationships with people. Their friends, however, now think they’re losing touch with reality after a strange encounter that was affected by the ghosts. Sam managing to stay calm is a positive step, as she wants to rebuild those friendships and make a good impression. After a couple of years, Sam gets better at juggling the spirit world with everyday life.
Sam And Jay Have Traditionally Prioritized The Ghosts
It might not seem like much, but Sam often puts the needs of the ghosts first. This usually creates conflict, as what the ghosts want clashes with what Sam and Jay desire, leading them to give in. This pattern is frustrating because it consistently puts Sam and Jay in a difficult spot, and it’s especially unfair considering the ghosts have already had a full life, sometimes at the expense of Sam and Jay living theirs.
Sam and Jay frequently abandon their own plans to keep the ghosts happy, but a recent example really stands out. In the previous episode, Jay nearly died because the group prioritized saving Carol, a ghost, over eliminating Elias Woodstone, which could have saved Jay. It was a compelling story showing Jay’s care for Carol, but realistically, choosing between a human life and a ghost’s life shouldn’t have been a difficult decision.
The funny situations Sam and Jay find themselves in while helping the ghosts are a key part of what makes Ghosts enjoyable. However, Sam and Jay need to focus on their own lives more often to make the show feel realistic. Sam especially should consider Jay’s feelings, as he doesn’t have the same connection to the ghosts she does. That’s why it was so refreshing to see Sam finally prioritize her own needs, even when Thorfinn was desperately trying to convince her otherwise.
Thor asked Sam and Jay to move a bookcase that was blocking the window, as he wanted to watch his son, Bjorn (Christian Jadah), get married – to a ghost, no less! Thor was very persuasive, and Sam usually can’t resist a request for a happy ending. But this time, Sam stood her ground. Although Sam and Jay eventually moved the bookcase – because their friends were going to the city, giving the Arondekars a chance – Sam didn’t give in to Thor’s request just to make him happy.
What Sam’s Development Means For Ghosts Season 5 And The Series’ Future
A recent change in the show’s approach might suggest the American sitcom Ghosts is nearing its conclusion. The CBS series, based on a popular British show that ended in 2023, initially followed many of the same storylines and ghost stories as its UK counterpart. Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to believe the American version might also mirror the British show’s ending.
During the last season of the British comedy, Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) and Allison (Charlotte Ritchie) – the counterparts to Jay and Sam – finally move out of Button House, their version of Woodstone Mansion. After five seasons of living with ghosts and prioritizing the spirits’ needs, they say goodbye to embark on a new life. Surprisingly, it was the ghosts who suggested the move, realizing Mike and Allison are focused on their growing family and wanting to be supportive.
It’s certainly possible Sam and Jay will eventually choose to live a life without ghosts, just like the characters in BBC’s Ghosts who actively sought a spirit-free home. The Arondekars focusing on their living friends could be a sign they’re starting to distance themselves from the supernatural. While Sam previously dedicated herself to helping ghosts move on, she might eventually decide she needs a break from all the ghostly activity too.
