Ghostbusters is Coming to AMC for the ‘Best Christmas Ever’

You might not think of it as a Christmas movie, but the 1984 film Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II, will be shown as part of a holiday movie series on November 29th.

AMC Networks is hosting its yearly holiday event, “Best Christmas Ever,” on November 29th, and it will include the classic Ghostbusters movies. The event will feature the original films starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Rick Moranis, as well as some of Bill Murray’s other well-known movies.

A marathon of classic comedies starring Bill Murray and directed by Harold Ramis will air on November 29th, starting with Caddyshack (1980). Following that at 2 p.m. is Murray’s romantic comedy Groundhog Day (1993). Then, both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II will be shown, at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. The event will wrap up at 9:30 p.m. with the only holiday film of the lineup, Scrooged (1988), directed by Richard Donner.

As a huge Ghostbusters fan, I always think about Bill Murray’s amazing performance as Peter Venkman! While the original Ghostbusters isn’t a Christmas movie or anything, the second one actually happens around New Year’s. The first movie was a massive hit when it came out over 40 years ago, earning nearly $300 million worldwide and still holding a fantastic 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel did pretty well too, bringing in over $215 million, but critics weren’t as impressed, giving it a score of only 54%.

The first movie introduces the Ghostbusters, a team of friends and scientists who are fired from their university jobs. They decide to start a ghost-removal service, and soon discover a portal to another dimension is about to open, threatening to destroy New York City.

The Movies Became a Full-Fledged Franchise

The first two Ghostbusters films were so successful that they launched a franchise which continued from 1986 to 1991. It took many years, but the Ghostbusters name returned in 2021 with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson also returned to reprise their iconic roles. A sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, was released in 2024.

Bill Murray recently appeared in the documentary John Candy: I Like Me. He has several upcoming projects, including The Springs, The Ploughmen, Epiphany, and Diamond, according to IMDb. He’s also joining Sonequa Martin-Green in the Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue, and stars in The Family Business, which you can watch on BET+.

Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II will air on AMC on Nov. 29.
