Gerard Butler’s Post-Apocalyptic Sequel Greenland 2: Migration Becomes an Instant PVOD Hit

Gerard Butler is known as one of the most financially successful action stars ever, with his movies earning over $2 billion globally. However, even a popular actor like Butler can’t guarantee success for every film, and his newest movie didn’t perform as well as hoped.

Despite a disappointing run in cinemas, the movie Greenland 2: Migration is finding success through on-demand rental services, according to FlixPatrol. This film continues the story of 2020’s Greenland, which also didn’t perform well at the box office, but still led to a follow-up.

Released on January 9th, Greenland 2: Migration came out early in the year. However, January is typically a slow time for movie theaters, and the film didn’t attract a large audience. As a result, it became available to rent or buy online on January 27th.

The movie quickly climbed to number two on the iTunes charts upon its release. However, because its release on video-on-demand platforms happened at the same time as another major release, it couldn’t reach the top spot. This somewhat softens the blow of its poor performance in theaters. So far, the sequel has earned only $18.4 million, despite costing around $90 million to make, according to The Numbers.

Let’s be honest, the first movie back in 2020 wasn’t a blockbuster, but it wasn’t a flop either. Made for just $34 million, it actually pulled in $40.6 million overseas. Considering it was caught in the whirlwind of the COVID-19 pandemic and faced a bunch of delays, I’d say those numbers were pretty respectable. It really managed to perform okay despite everything going on at the time.

Critics generally loved Greenland, giving it a high approval rating of 78% and a ‘Certified Fresh’ designation. Audiences were less enthusiastic, giving it a score of 63%.

Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin are back for the next installment, reprising their roles. The movie also stars Roman Griffin Davis, taking over from Roger Dale Floyd, as well as Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins.

Ric Roman Waugh, who often works with Gerard Butler, directed the follow-up film. Chris Sparling returned as a writer, and Mitchell LaFortune joined the writing team.

Greenland Director Has a Brand-New Action Movie Coming Out

While continuing work on the Greenland sequel, Ric Roman Waugh also directed another film, which is scheduled for release on January 30th.

The director discussed working with major action stars like Gerard Butler and Jason Statham, but emphasized he didn’t cast them simply because of their fame. He explained that he prioritizes finding actors who can portray relatable, ordinary people in action roles, rather than typical action heroes. He’s looking for believable characters, not just larger-than-life figures.

You know, when I think about action stars, what really strikes me is how down-to-earth they are. Like, Jason Statham just has this natural confidence and seems like a genuinely good family man. And Gerard Butler? He’s incredibly sensitive and caring, and that really comes through in the roles he takes – it just feels authentic. It’s cool to see actors who bring that realness to these larger-than-life characters.

Greenland 2: Migration is playing in theaters and is available to rent or buy on digital platforms.
