George Takei Welcomes Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Cast On 60th Anniversary

George Takei, a famous star from the original Star Trek, is hosting the cast of the new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to celebrate Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary. The series, executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, will debut with two episodes on January 15th on Paramount+.

In 2026, Star Trek will celebrate its 60th anniversary. The original series first aired in the United States on September 8, 1966. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the twelfth Star Trek television series, and the sixth show produced by Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout for Paramount+.

George Takei, known for his role on the original Star Trek, recently welcomed the new cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy via a video message on the show’s official Instagram. He wished them well with the classic Star Trek blessing, “Live long and prosper.” You can watch the video here:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy features a new group of young actors – Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner – as Starfleet cadets. This is the first Star Trek series that tells a story from the perspective of young people.

The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, stars Academy Award winner Holly Hunter as Captain Nahla Ake and features Paul Giamatti (an Academy Award nominee) as the season one villain, Nus Braka. The show will also include familiar faces from previous Star Trek series, such as The Doctor, played by Robert Picardo, who appeared in Star Trek: Voyager.

George Takei is famous for playing Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series. He’s now one of only three surviving members of that cast, along with William Shatner and Walter Koenig. Sulu had an impressive career in Starfleet, starting as the helmsman of the USS Enterprise and eventually becoming Captain of the USS Excelsior – a path that aspiring Starfleet cadets would be wise to follow.

Set nearly 300 years in the future, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place further along in the established Star Trek timeline than any other series. It’s a perfect opportunity for George Takei, an original cast member, to welcome a new generation of Star Trek heroes and pass on the legacy of Starfleet.
