Kit Harington, known for his role in Game of Thrones, is now starring in a new TV series called Dark Winds. This psychological thriller, which he also helps produce, has become AMC’s most popular streaming show in the US, proving to be another success for the author after his work on Game of Thrones.
Since February 16th, Dark Winds has been the most popular show or movie available on AMC+, according to data from FlixPatrol. It’s remained at the top despite strong competition from other shows like Tales of the Walking Dead, Interview with the Vampire, and Mad Men.
Inspired by the popular Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds follows Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito – three Navajo Tribal Police officers working in the 1970s. They investigate a string of brutal crimes across the Four Corners area of the American Southwest.
The series features Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon, and Jessica Matten in the lead roles as Joe, Jim, and Bernadette, alongside a strong ensemble cast including Elva Guerra, Eugene Brave Rock, and Rainn Wilson, known from The Office.
Since its debut in July 2022, Dark Winds has received generally positive reviews from critics, scoring well on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audience reactions have been more mixed, with some viewers enjoying the show more than others. The series is consistently praised for its captivating stories.
The show received a fan score of 76% on one website, but faced criticism after its first season. Members of the Navajo Nation pointed out several inaccuracies in how the series portrayed their culture and language.
After receiving some criticism, director Chris Eyre decided to work with George R. Joe, a professor at a Navajo college, to ensure the film accurately portrayed Navajo culture. Eyre explained to the Navajo Times that getting the cultural representation right was a top priority, and he was willing to make changes if needed.
Dark Winds Season 4 Will Serve As A Major Moment For Jim Chee
Before the fourth season began, Gordon shared a clue about what’s in store, suggesting the new episodes are crucial for his character’s development. He explained that the showrunner, John Wirth, contacted him a couple of weeks before filming started and promised him more screen time. “He basically said, ‘You’re going to get the screen time you deserve,'” Gordon recalled.
Gordon was initially surprised and confused – he later remembered thinking, “What is happening? This is unbelievable!” – but he eventually decided to take on the task.
While The Ghostway is a Jim Chee story, we needed to adapt it so it fit with the overall show and all of our characters. That meant making some changes, but I was confident in my ability, the team, the writers, John, and the actors. It was much easier to develop the character this time around, and it’s great to receive positive feedback.
You can now watch Dark Winds on AMC+, and new episodes are released every Sunday.
