While the last season of Game of Thrones gave many of its main characters relatively happy conclusions, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, George R.R. Martin, originally planned much different—and likely darker—outcomes for them. He recently shared some details about what he had in store for characters like Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark in the books.
George R.R. Martin says he was originally ‘going to have Sansa die’
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin revealed that the ending he envisions for his A Song of Ice and Fire books will be significantly different from the conclusion of the Game of Thrones TV show. He also plans to kill off several important characters, including some he previously considered killing, like Sansa Stark, and potentially others such as Tyrion Lannister.
The show’s ending will differ quite a bit from the book. Some characters who survive in the book will die in the show, and some who die in the book will live on in the show, he explained.
George R.R. Martin discussed his original plans for Tyrion and Sansa, explaining he initially intended to kill off more characters than the show did. He felt the show’s ending was too optimistic, and didn’t envision a happy fate for Tyrion, considering his character’s story has always been tragic. He had planned for Sansa to die, but admitted she was portrayed so well in the show that he might reconsider letting her live.
Despite ongoing expectations, the author doesn’t anticipate finishing the final two books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series—The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring—in the near future. He explained that he wants to write more stories about Dunk and Egg and also another book related to the history of the Targaryen dynasty (Fire and Blood). He believes completing these other projects might allow him to finally finish The Winds of Winter, which he acknowledges is the most important thing to fans. However, he admits that he doesn’t always feel motivated to work on it.
Martin hasn’t announced when his last two books will be released, but he plans to finish them. He feels it would be a personal defeat if he didn’t bring the story to a conclusion.
