George Clooney jokingly claimed he was the best Batman in a recent interview. This is typical for him, as he’s known for making fun of his performance in Batman & Robin, a movie often considered a major disappointment. So, his playful comment isn’t surprising at all.
After Val Kilmer, George Clooney took on the role of Batman in the 1997 film Batman & Robin, with Chris O’Donnell playing Robin. The movie pitted Clooney’s Batman against villains played by Arnold Schwarzenegger (Mr. Freeze) and Uma Thurman (Poison Ivy), along with a poorly received version of Bane. Clooney’s portrayal and the film itself were widely criticized, and it’s often blamed for nearly ruining superhero movies. Fortunately, Christopher Nolan revitalized the genre almost ten years later.
In an interview with IMDb, George Clooney was asked what role or film he felt defined his career. He responded:
I always joke about Batman & Robin. I’ll tell people I’m the best Batman, and you can just see the shock on their faces – they can’t believe I’d say something like that!
George Clooney Returned as Bruce Wayne…in Another DC Franchise Killer

Warner Bros. Pictures
George Clooney has always been open about how much he dislikes the movie Batman & Robin. He explained that when a film is so widely hated, all you can do is accept it and move on. He recently told MovieWeb that even his son makes fun of him for being in it, and his son hasn’t even watched the movie!
My son went as Batman for Halloween, which was funny because he’s never even watched the movie. I jokingly told him I was Batman, and he immediately called my bluff, saying, ‘Not really.’ I had to admit he was absolutely right!
George Clooney unexpectedly showed up in the final moments of the 2023 film The Flash. Right before the credits rolled, Ezra Miller’s character, Barry Allen, thought he’d saved the universe, but discovered he’d accidentally swapped Ben Affleck’s Batman with a version played by George Clooney. Clooney recently talked about making that brief appearance, saying:
Everyone really wanted me to reprise my role as Batman, as you probably know. I jokingly asked about the rubber nipples from the previous suit, and they suggested maybe we could skip them this time. I responded by saying that if we left them out, it wouldn’t really feel like my Batman anymore.
Despite this, Clooney also stated in the interview that he wouldn’t reprise the role in any significant capacity, explaining:
“I don’t think there’s enough drugs in the world for me to go back there.”
Honestly, looking back, it’s clear that whole previous DC movie universe – the DCEU – was never going to last. All those ideas about bringing Michael Keaton back as Batman for the long haul, or even that potential showdown between Black Adam and Superman? They’re gone. James Gunn is really building something completely new with the DCU, and that means some things just won’t carry over. And, let’s be real, that probably means we’ve seen the last of George Clooney’s Batman, which, if I’m being honest, is probably a good thing for everyone involved.
