Donald Trump commented on New Year’s Eve, via a report in Variety, about George and Amal Clooney receiving French citizenship. He referenced an opinion piece Clooney wrote for The New York Times in 2024, which Trump claimed influenced his decision not to run for re-election and led to Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic nominee. Trump then stated:

Following a highly publicized disagreement, George Clooney publicly withdrew his support for Joe, endorsing Jamala(K!) instead. Jamala is currently competing with several other candidates – including Tim Waltz and Gavin Newsom – to become the Democratic nominee, despite facing an uphill battle. Clooney received far more attention for his political stances than for his acting work, which was generally considered unremarkable. He wasn’t a true movie star, but rather someone who frequently voiced complaints about practical politics. The sentiment remains: Make America Great Again!

George Clooney playfully responded to Donald Trump’s statement by echoing his “Make America Great Again” slogan, but with a twist. Clooney said he agreed with the president and that making America great would begin in November, referring to the 2026 midterm elections. He was implying that a Democratic win in the House and Senate – currently controlled by Republicans – would be a positive step for the country, effectively suggesting it’s time to move past Trump’s policies.

It’s not surprising, given this administration, but it’s still undignified for the President to be publicly feuding with celebrities. President Trump has repeatedly tried to get late-night hosts like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers canceled because they’ve criticized him. He even criticized director Rob Reiner after Reiner passed away, which even some of Trump’s own supporters found inappropriate.

It’s not just Donald Trump – several people in his administration have also gotten into public disputes with celebrities who’ve criticized them. Recently, when singer Sabrina Carpenter objected to the White House using her song “Juno” in a video promoting ICE – calling it “evil and disgusting” and saying she didn’t want her music associated with their policies – White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson responded by attacking Carpenter. Using official government accounts, Jackson tweeted that they wouldn’t apologize for deporting criminals, and went on to insult anyone who would defend them, implying Carpenter was either unintelligent or slow.

The 2026 midterm elections are shaping up to be crucial. President Trump’s first year in his second term has been marked by significant debate and policy changes. These include increased immigration enforcement, reductions in funding for programs like food assistance, healthcare, and public broadcasting, and concerns about censorship, as seen with Disney’s decisions regarding LGBTQ+ content.
