‘Gen V’ Season 2 Ending, Explained: What It Means for ‘The Boys’ Season 5

The second season of Gen V concludes with a sense that the larger story is still unfolding. Although the season resolves the conflicts with its main villain, Dean Cipher (also known as Doug, portrayed by Hamish Linklater), and seemingly confirms Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) is alive, the overall struggle is far from finished.

Even after the events at Godolkin University, Homelander (Antony Starr) remains a major danger, particularly because President Calhoun (David Andrews) seems to be under his control, and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) is pursuing a mysterious plan. The ending of Gen V Season 2 hints that the young heroes will likely be important in the final season of The Boys.

The Kids, With an Assist From Polarity, Win Their Fight, But It’s Not Over

Marie and her friends believed they’d found a solution to their problems when they discovered the body Cipher was hiding – it was Godolkin. Stan Edgar explained that Godolkin intended to elevate Supes and establish their dominance, which initially seemed positive to the group. They were especially hopeful because Godolkin might hold the key to defeating Homelander and bringing stability. After all, Godolkin created both Marie and Homelander through Project Odessa.

When Marie brought him back to life, the shocking truth emerged: he and Cipher were the same person. It turned out Godolkin had taken control of Cipher’s mind and body, explaining why their goals were identical. Before becoming Cipher, he was just a regular man named Doug. Godolkin’s ultimate aim was a world ruled by Supes, but after decades of seeing how Supes had become, he was deeply disappointed. He wanted to eliminate those he considered weak, irrelevant, or simply embarrassing – and Rufus was a prime example. He planned to start by culling the students at the school.

He quickly regained and even strengthened his abilities, eventually gaining control over many students, including Marie. However, he was finally challenged when Marie and the others teamed up against him. They demonstrated that everyone, even those with seemingly strange or ineffective powers, had something valuable to contribute. This included Wyatt Dorion, known as Black Hole, who could absorb objects, Harper, who could copy powers for a short time, and Ally, or Bushmaster, who could manipulate her hair for combat. All of them played a crucial role in defeating him once and for all.

But the true hero was Polarity. Marie had restored his powers and health, and Sister Sage freed him after Godolkin’s treachery, allowing him to arrive just when they needed him. He quickly overpowered Godolkin, holding him down long enough for Marie to break free from his control and, in a shocking moment, destroy him. Looking at what was left of Godolkin, Marie told Polarity, “That’s for Andre,” and added, with a defiant edge, “thanks for the power-up, jerk.” However, it’s what happens after this that really kicks off the events of The Boys.

‘Gen V’ Season 2 Ends With the Kids Joining the Resistance

Prime Video

After narrowly escaping danger, the kids go into hiding to plan their next move. Surprisingly, they’re found by Starlight (Erin Moriarty) while on the run. It turns out she had an unexpected assist in locating them: A-Train (Jessie T. Usher). As viewers may remember from Season 4 of The Boys, A-Train was secretly helping the team, acting as an inside source within The Seven. When his cover was blown, he fled, attempting to convince Ashley (Colby Minifie) to join him. She declined, choosing instead to use Compound V to save herself, but she did allow him to escape, even telling him to disable his tracking chip so he wouldn’t be found.

At the start of the season, Starlight urgently asked Marie to come back to Godolkin University to study Project Odessa. It’s unclear if Starlight already knew Marie was involved with the project and wanted her to understand her own abilities, but she was firm that Marie’s assistance was crucial.

Facing this possible new ally – someone who probably knows about Marie’s abilities and has seen how powerful she is – Starlight moves forward. “Do you want to join the resistance?” she asks. The ally smiles, indicating they’re eager and ready to help.

‘Gen V’ Season 2 Is Setting up Some Crossovers

‘The Boys’ Season 5 Looks Very Promising

Considering what happened at the end of Season 4 of The Boys and likely what will happen in Season 2 of Gen V, it seems very likely that Marie, Jordan, Emma, Sam, Cate, and Annabeth will join the battle against Homelander.

The show seems to be positioning Marie as the only one who could potentially defeat Homelander, particularly now that Godolkin is gone. Her involvement in Project Odessa implies she possesses comparable abilities. Plus, Marie is younger and more self-assured, giving her a natural edge. It’s hard to picture a future where Marie and Homelander don’t eventually confront each other.

As a huge fan of The Boys, the Season 4 finale left me reeling! It was brutal seeing the whole team fall apart. Hughie got captured, though Starlight thankfully got away. What really got to me was seeing Frenchie and Kimiko taken – and Kimiko actually spoke for the first time in years, screaming ‘no!’ as they dragged Frenchie off. Mother’s Milk didn’t stand a chance, ambushed before he could get his family to safety. But the biggest cliffhanger? Butcher, completely powered up with those tentacle things and after taking out Victoria Neuman, just drove off with the last of the virus. It feels like he’s about to unleash a full-blown pandemic that could wipe out all the Supes! Seriously, what a season finale.

The upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys is expected to feature a major showdown between the heroes and villains. It will probably take a team effort to rescue people and thwart Homelander’s evil scheme. It’s unclear if the season will offer a definitive conclusion, or if it will set up future storylines. As for the spin-off series Gen V, a third season hasn’t been confirmed yet.

We now know that Starlight is preparing for a fight. She won’t let someone as terrible as Homelander take control without resisting. She’s determined to protect both superpowered people and regular humans, and to correct the lies Homelander and his followers are spreading. With the powerful new team she’s assembled, she might actually win. Watch Gen V on Prime Video.
