Viewers are getting a sneak peek at the upcoming intense Western, The Abandons. This new series stars Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey and The X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson.
According to Per, Netflix has announced the release date for its upcoming Western drama, The Abandons. Along with the date, they also shared some new photos from the series. Created by , The Abandons stars Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey as Fiona Nolan, a deeply religious Irish woman struggling to survive in the 1850s. Because she can’t have children herself, Fiona takes in four orphaned children and works to create a home for them in Oregon. However, wealthy Europeans soon appear, trying to take ownership of her land, which starts a large and complicated story full of deceit, conflict, and treachery.
The Abandons features a stellar cast including Gillian Anderson as Constance Van Ness, Lucas Till as Garret Van Ness, Aisling Franciosi as Trisha Van Ness, Nick Robinson as Elias Teller, Diana Silvers as Dahlia Teller, Lamar Johnson as Albert Mason, and Natalia del Riego as Lilla Belle. First-look photos highlight the ensemble, showcasing Lena Headey as Fiona standing on the main street and Gillian Anderson’s Constance Van Ness on a wooden balcony.
Netflix gave a sneak peek into the dynamic between Headey’s Fiona and Anderson’s Constance, describing it as a clash between two powerful women. According to a character description, Constance is a determined leader who will do anything to safeguard and expand the mining wealth she received from her husband – and successfully increased. Her goal is to strengthen the Van Ness family’s influence in the harsh and competitive frontier.
What Can Audiences Expect from The Abandons When It Arrives on Netflix?
In 2021, Sutter discussed his fascination with the beginnings of La Cosa Nostra, explaining, “I’ve always been intrigued by how the origins of La Cosa Nostra began with Sicilian peasant families who were severely disadvantaged by wealthy landowners and aristocrats.” Sutter went on to say, “These families united to protect themselves from these abusive landowners, and by taking justice into their own hands, La Cosa Nostra emerged as the ruling power, establishing its own law and order in the region.”
According to Netflix, The Abandons follows a varied group of outcast families in 1850s Oregon. These individuals unite to combat corruption and will do whatever it takes to protect their home. The Western series will delve into the blurry boundary between simply staying alive and following the law, the results of using violence, and how secrets can destroy people, all as this unconventional family struggles to hold onto their land.
The Abandons is currently slated to premiere on Netflix on Dec. 4.
