Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Will Make The Battle Of The Bastards Look Small

The upcoming prequel, House of the Dragon, will kick off its third season with a massive battle – one that’s expected to be even larger in scale than the famous Battle of the Bastards. Season 3 premieres on June 21, 2026, and promises an epic conflict, especially for those familiar with the events detailed in Fire & Blood.

The second season of House of the Dragon concluded on August 4, 2024, which was nearly two years ago. At the end of the season, the Targaryens were preparing for war throughout Westeros. The finale showed armies gathering from across the land, creating anticipation for the battles to come, and season 3 is expected to finally deliver on that promise.

Ryan Condal, the creator of House of the Dragon, says the season’s opening battle might be “the craziest episode of television ever made” (according to EW). This refers to the Battle of the Gullet, a naval conflict teased in season 2 and briefly shown in the show’s trailers.

The conflict centers around the Gullet, a stretch of sea near Dragonstone that controls access to King’s Landing. Rhaenyra and her Velaryon fleet are blockading the city, hoping to force its surrender by cutting off supplies and weakening support for Aegon II. To overcome this blockade, Aegon’s supporters, known as the Greens, have enlisted the aid of the Triarchy.

The upcoming battle will pit Westeros’s strongest fleet against one of Essos’s most formidable naval forces, with almost all of the dragons supporting the Blacks taking part—except for one. Described in Fire & Blood, this conflict is a fierce and explosive confrontation, marking the first major clash in the Dance of the Dragons.

The upcoming battle will feature many key characters, largely fighting for the Blacks. Considering how few naval and dragon battles we’ve seen in Game of Thrones, this fight – the Battle of the Gullet – has the potential to be even more visually stunning than the famous Battle of the Bastards.

The Battle Of The Gullet Will Set The Tone For The Rest Of House Of The Dragon

Early episodes of Game of Thrones usually focused on re-establishing all the characters and their storylines. House of the Dragon, however, has started its seasons with more immediate action. The first episode of Season 2, for example, features the shocking and violent deaths of Queen Helaena’s children.

Season 3 is promising to be even more intense, kicking off with a huge battle that will likely define the entire season. The Battle of the Gullet, featured in the premiere, could be the largest we’ve seen in the world of Game of Thrones, though that might not be the case for long, as even bigger conflicts could emerge by August.

The creators of House of the Dragon are currently planning for four seasons total, giving us a good idea of what might happen each year. Based on the events detailed in Fire & Blood, it’s likely that season 3 of House of the Dragon will conclude with the first Battle of Tumbleton.

As much as we loved the huge battles in Game of Thrones, I think House of the Dragon has the potential to deliver conflicts that are even more epic. While season 3 might kick off with an absolutely massive war, I’m guessing that’s just the beginning – I have a feeling the showrunners have a lot more in store for us as the season unfolds.
