Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau New Historical Series Becomes a Hit on Streaming Despite Historical Inaccuracies

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, an actor nominated for two Emmys, is famous for playing Jaime Lannister in HBO’s popular series. He’s now the star of a new historical drama that’s quickly becoming a success with streaming viewers.

The historical drama King & Conqueror, which first launched in August, has quickly become popular on Prime Video. As of November 7th, it’s climbed five places to become the third most-watched show in the U.S., jumping from eighth place the previous day. Starring James Norton and Coster-Waldau, the series offers a fictionalized account of the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England.

After its debut, the show King & Conqueror faced criticism for getting historical details wrong. According to The Independent, many BBC viewers called it a disappointing failure, citing the use of contemporary language that didn’t fit the 11th-century setting. Some viewers pointed out that the characters’ speech sounded too modern for the period.

Viewers are overwhelmingly critical of the new show, King & Conqueror. One user on X called it “complete nonsense” and “bad TV,” noting that even with a strong performance by Eddie Marsan (as King Edward), the show lacked a good script and failed as drama. Another viewer simply stated the series was “wrong in so many ways,” and a waste of potential, arguing it missed a chance to accurately portray history.

Despite gaining popularity on streaming platforms, the show King & Conqueror has received mostly negative reviews. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 55%, while audiences rated it even lower at 36%. The series was created by Michael Robert Johnson, who also wrote the screenplays for Writing (2009) and Pompeii (2014). King & Conqueror tells the story of a historic conflict that shaped a country and continent for centuries. It focuses on the rivalry between Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy, two former allies who were ultimately forced to fight for the throne of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, a war fueled by both circumstance and personal ambition.

Executive Called the Series ‘Groundbreaking’ When it was Announced

Lindsey Martin, a senior VP at CBS Studios, discussed the collaboration on the series with its stars, James Norton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and creator Baltasar Kormákur. She expressed excitement about partnering with them on King & Conqueror, calling it a unique and high-quality series with international appeal.

Martin also commended Michael Robert Johnson, the creator and executive producer of the series. He highlighted that Johnson’s writing brings a new and exciting perspective to a classic story, while still feeling modern and relatable. Martin expressed pride in the team’s work and anticipation for seeing the series, featuring a talented cast, come to life on screen.

King & Conqueror is streaming on Prime Video.
