The upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is making a significant improvement over House of the Dragon. The six-episode series will follow the journey of Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffley, and his companion, Prince Aegon Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell), who will one day become king of Westeros. This new installment in the Game of Thrones universe will premiere in January and will stand out from previous shows in a couple of important ways.
HBO announced exciting news for fans of Game of Thrones, renewing House of the Dragon for a fourth season and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second. The network promised a consistent stream of new content from the world of Westeros, with the tagline: “One Realm, New Stories, Every Year.”

The premiere of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled for January 18, 2026, with the second season arriving in 2027. House of the Dragon will return for its third season in Summer 2026, and the fourth season is planned for 2028. This continues the pattern of releasing a new season every two years, which began in 2022.

Unlike House of the Dragon, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will release new seasons every year, just like the first seven seasons of Game of Thrones did.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama, told Deadline in February that the network is planning two more seasons of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Each season will be based on one of George R. R. Martin’s three Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight.
This is largely because the show is aiming for a “smaller, more affordable production with fewer visual effects and a quicker filming schedule.” HBO is even exploring the possibility of filming the remaining seasons consecutively.
According to Redanian Intelligence, production on Season 2 of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was originally scheduled to begin in early 2026, immediately followed by filming for Season 3. However, recent news of a single-season renewal suggests those plans have likely been altered.
Filming for the first season of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms started in June 2024, and it premiered in January 2026. Because of this, HBO viewers can likely expect the second season to arrive around the summer or fall of 2026.
What Comes Next for the Game of Thrones Universe?

Just to quickly summarize, the new series Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on January 18, 2026. Then, season three of House of the Dragon is planned for summer 2026. After that, we’ll see more stories with Dunk and Egg in 2027, and the fourth installment of the Targaryen saga is expected in 2028.
If the second Game of Thrones spin-off gets renewed, as many expect, it might premiere in 2028 with the next season of House of the Dragon. Otherwise, it could be held back until 2029 to ensure a new Game of Thrones series airs on TV every year.
It’s now uncertain if the fourth season will be the last for House of the Dragon, despite initial plans. According to Deadline, writers are currently working on Season 4, but the show’s ending could be adjusted, potentially extending it to a fifth season as late as 2030.
Once the existing spin-off shows conclude, HBO will be looking for fresh content to fill the gap. Luckily, several new Game of Thrones projects are already in development, including a feature film, various animated series, and the long-awaited story of Aegon’s Conquest.
