Game of Thrones Fans Warned About Spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Fans of Game of Thrones have been surprised by recent news about the upcoming spinoff series. Set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 100 years after House of the Dragon, the new show will have a more focused story and, as a result, a smaller budget from HBO.

The new show might not have the same lavish scale as Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, and the creators know this. Ira Parker, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, discussed this during a recent presentation.

Parker explained that this season, everything was presented through the character Dunk’s perspective. Dunk is the only character we experience the story through, and that influenced all aspects of the production – from the music and titles to the visuals and even the budget. The limited budget reflects Dunk’s background; he starts with very little. The creators aimed for a raw and authentic feel, mirroring Dunk’s simple and unrefined nature.

There are a lot of incredibly well-produced shows out there, and we’re different from those. We hope viewers will be understanding of our rougher edges. We did our best, and that’s what this story is about – a character, Dunk, stepping into a challenging and new situation, trying to succeed despite being out of his depth.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Future Is Already Secured

Though it has fewer characters and a lower budget compared to other shows in the same world, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is looking promising. The show has been renewed for a second season, and filming is scheduled to start in Belfast, Ireland, before the end of 2025.

Working on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms felt very organic and unforced, according to Parker. He believes audiences will easily connect with the new character, Ser Duncan the Tall, noting he personally identified with the role. Duncan is an outsider, originating from the poorest parts of King’s Landing, and finds himself completely unfamiliar with the nobility he meets. This creates a humorous dynamic, as he often questions whether he’s being mocked or simply experiencing the absurdity of court life, leading to a lot of genuine and funny moments.

The HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. These stories were originally published separately but later compiled into a single book, also titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The first season of the show will cover the first novella, The Hedge Knight.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tells the story of Dunk, a humble knight who eventually becomes Ser Duncan the Tall, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and Egg, who is secretly the future King Aegon V Targaryen. The first season focuses on how these two very different characters first meet at a tournament.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on HBO on Jan. 18.
