George R.R. Martin is a decisive person who has a clear vision for his work. While most of his readers are eager to see him finish the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, he faces numerous distractions. This has led to some frustrated fans directly confronting him, and one particular encounter remains vivid in his memory even after five months.
Martin is well-known for taking a very long time to write “The Winds of Winter,” the second-to-last book in his popular “A Song of Ice and Fire” series. The fifth book, “A Dance With Dragons,” came out in 2011, six years after the fourth, “A Feast for Crows.” While fans expected some delay, they didn’t anticipate a wait of 15 years and still counting.
At a science fiction convention in Seattle last August, George R.R. Martin participated in a discussion with authors like Brandon Sanderson, known for his Mistborn and Stormlight Archive series. During the question-and-answer session, a fan unexpectedly stood up and directly challenged Martin, urging him to let Sanderson finish the novel because he fears Martin doesn’t have much time left. The panel was visibly shocked when the fan said to Martin:
Look, knowing George’s health isn’t great, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask Brandon. It’s a difficult question, but essentially, how would he feel about another author stepping in to complete the series if necessary? It’s about ensuring these stories see the finish line, even if George isn’t able to be there himself.
I recently read an interview with Martin in The Hollywood Reporter, and something he mentioned really stuck with me. He said a particular experience still resonates with him to this day, and honestly, it’s something I can totally relate to – certain moments just stay with you, don’t they?
I overheard them saying he was a liar and wouldn’t live much longer, constantly pointing out his age. It was incredibly insensitive, and frankly, nobody deserves to hear something like that.
