Many fans struggled with how the original series ended, but the franchise has remained popular. Now, Warner Bros. has officially announced that a movie is in development.
Following the successful eight-season run of the original series, the world of Game of Thrones continues to grow with two prequel shows: House of the Dragon, which will return for a third season, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, currently in production for its second season. But that’s not all – more stories set in Westeros are on the way. Warner Bros. recently confirmed plans for another new series, revealed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
What to Expect From Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest?
Fans have long speculated about this project, and now it’s officially happening. Warner Bros. has confirmed a film based on the events of Aegon’s Conquest, the first story in the Game of Thrones universe, will be released in 2027 or later. Beau Willimon, known for his work on House of Cards and Andor, is writing the screenplay.
The next installment will likely focus on Aegon I Targaryen, whose life is told in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. This book covers the history of the Targaryen dynasty over centuries and also served as the basis for the House of the Dragon series.
Aegon I was the first king to rule all Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. He famously created the Iron Throne by melting down the swords of those he defeated. As of now, the actors for the upcoming film haven’t been announced.
Originally, plans began in April 2023, but Warner Bros. later decided to create a movie instead.
The Game of Thrones Universe Keeps Thriving
As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I’m keeping my eye on Aegon’s Conquest, though we don’t have a release date for that one yet. Right now, though, we’re getting two other shows! House of the Dragon is coming back for Season 3, currently slated for June 2026, and they’ve already renewed it for a fourth season, which will apparently bring the whole story to a close. It’s exciting to see this world expanding!
Earlier this year, the show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuted, telling the story of Dunk and Egg’s travels through Westeros over a century after the events of House of the Dragon. Unlike the first spin-off series, which had a rocky production with disagreements between George R.R. Martin and its showrunner, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been a huge hit with audiences.
The show has been picked up for another season. While recent severe weather in Spain caused some production delays, it’s expected to be back on air in early 2027.
In addition to the two new spinoff shows, the world of House of the Dragon will expand with a stage play premiering this summer and a video game adaptation.
