According to recent reports, James Gunn’s upcoming Wonder Woman movie will be quite different from the previous films starring Gal Gadot. While Wonder Woman wasn’t initially included in DC Studios’ first announced plans in 2023, it’s now become a major focus for Warner Bros.’ new DC Universe and is moving forward quickly.
The upcoming Wonder Woman will have a fresh look and voice, marking a departure from previous film versions, as James Gunn establishes his vision for the DC Universe. Diana of Themyscira is expected to be a key character in the new DCU, alongside heroes like Superman and Batman, but with her own distinct identity.
I was listening to the podcast The Hot Mic the other day, and Jeff Sneider dropped some interesting news about the new Wonder Woman movie DC is planning. Apparently, the tone is going to be very different from the Gal Gadot films – a real departure, it sounds like!
According to Sneider, James Gunn and the team at DC Studios are aiming for a more upbeat and enjoyable tone with their upcoming projects, a shift from the darker feel of the Wonder Woman movies starring Gal Gadot.
According to my sources, the producers are hoping to cast someone who is cheerful, energetic, and brings a sense of fun to the role of Wonder Woman.
Similar to many characters in the DC Extended Universe, Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder Woman was often very serious and had a generally darker feel, particularly in the films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
While Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman appeared in films like Shazam: Fury of the Gods with a more playful personality, that lighter side emerged after the character had already become known for the darker, more serious tone of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie took a lighter, more whimsical approach than expected. It appears this trend will continue with his new Wonder Woman film, which is also heading in a similar, less serious direction.
While details like casting and a release date haven’t been announced yet, the new Wonder Woman movie for the DC Universe is progressing quickly, especially considering it was only recently confirmed. Ana Nogueira, who wrote the script for Supergirl, is writing the screenplay, and a director hasn’t been chosen.
Why Is James Gunn Changing Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman was a popular character from the previous DC movie universe, and her 2017 film is still considered the best of that series. Given her success and fan base, it’s natural to wonder why she’s being reimagined in the new DC Universe.
Like other heroes in the new DC Universe, Wonder Woman needs a fresh take to stand out. James Gunn and the DC Studios team plan to achieve this by adding more humor and lightness to the character in the upcoming films and shows.
These changes might actually be a good thing, particularly for viewers who really enjoyed Gal Gadot’s time as Wonder Woman.
Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder Woman was often a more serious take on the character, fitting the generally dark tone of the DC Universe. However, some of her most memorable scenes, especially in the first Wonder Woman movie, showed a brighter, more hopeful side, offering a refreshing contrast to the franchise’s often gloomy atmosphere.
If Wonder Woman’s upcoming appearance in the DCU captured the same emotional honesty that James Gunn brought to Superman, it could be truly special.
Look, the character is still going to face some genuinely frightening and depressing situations, that much is clear. But honestly? What this character really needs is a little heart. A little warmth and emotional depth on screen would make a huge difference, and it’s exactly what I think will elevate their story.
