The popular historical drama series is adding five new actors to its cast for the second season. The show, which streams on Disney+, won the Emmy Award for best drama series in 2024.
Several new actors—Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi, and Takashi Yamaguchi—have been added to the cast of Shōgun Season 2. They’ll be joining Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, Ren Meguro, Asami Mizukawa, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Yûko Miyamoto, Yuka Kouri, Tommy Bastow, Jun Kunimura, Yoriko Dôguchi, Eita Okuno, and Takaaki Enoki, who were previously announced.
Anna Sawai, who won an award for her role in Season 1, won’t be returning for Season 2. Her character, Toda Mariko, was killed off in a dramatic explosion near the end of last season. However, there’s still a small chance she could reappear if the writers find a believable way to bring her back.
Shōgun Season 2 Is Already in Production
I’m so excited to hear they’re filming the next season in Vancouver! It’s set over a decade after everything that happened in the first one, and it continues the amazing story of those two men whose lives are so connected. The first season perfectly brought James Clavell’s book to life, and now the showrunners, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, are building something completely new and original to take the story forward. It sounds like they’re really dedicated to crafting a fresh chapter!
In June 2024, Marks explained that the project has expanded into a continuing drama series. He pointed out that many questions from the original story remained, including why the main character wasn’t initially presented as such. He shared these thoughts at the time.
We already knew the outcome, and seeing that final moment made us realize what we needed to achieve. We believe we’ve created something truly exciting and unexpected.
Hiroyuki Sanada, reprising his role as Lord Toranaga, mentioned last November that his character hasn’t found peace. He explained that Toranaga will continue to face conflicts in pursuit of a peaceful Japan, promising more action, strategic maneuvering, and family drama in the upcoming season compared to the first.
Shōgun Broke a Major Emmys Record
Originally planned as a one-time series, Shōgun received so much praise that FX started discussing potential follow-up seasons with the estate of the author, James Clavell. This allowed the show to be considered for Emmy Awards in the drama categories, and it proved to be a successful move. Shōgun ultimately broke records, becoming the most awarded single season of television ever, with a total of 18 Emmy wins.
The recent win for Outstanding Drama Series made Shōgun the first series in the Japanese language to achieve this honor. In addition to this milestone, the show received four Golden Globe Awards – including the award for Best Television Series – Drama – and a Peabody Award, among other recognitions.
You can now watch the first season of Shōgun. While FX and Disney+ haven’t announced exactly when the second season will come out, filming has begun and it’s expected to premiere sometime between 2027 and 2028.
