The arrival of Futurama season 14 was already highly anticipated by fans of the show, but it’s even more exciting because a beloved character has returned. Futurama has had a long and unusual run. Unlike Hyperdrive, another sci-fi comedy that was cancelled too soon, Futurama has been cancelled and brought back to life multiple times over its 27 years.
I first discovered Futurama when it premiered in 1999, and I was completely hooked! It ran for four amazing seasons before it was originally canceled in 2003, which was a huge disappointment. But thankfully, they weren’t done with it! They released four direct-to-DVD movies from 2006 to 2008, and those were so popular that Comedy Central brought the show back in 2010 for another two seasons. I thought it was gone for good when Comedy Central canceled it again in 2013, but unbelievably, Hulu revived it in 2023! It’s a show that just refuses to die, and I’m thrilled!
Hulu has been reviving Futurama since 2023, releasing three seasons of ten episodes each. A fourth season is scheduled to arrive in early August 2026. Season 14 will feature the return of the entire Planet Express crew – including Leela, Fry, Amy, Bender, Hermes, Zoidberg, and Professor Farnsworth – as shown in the first trailer. Fans will also be happy to see Nibbler back, after the character took a break for most of seasons 12 and 13.
Futurama Season 14 Gives Nibbler His First Story Since 2023
In the first season of the revived Futurama on Hulu – specifically in episode 2, titled “Parasites Regained” – Nibbler was featured in a humorous take on the movie Dune. The plot involved Nibbler losing his intelligence to tiny worms, which were the same parasites that appeared in the classic episode “Parasites Lost” from the original series. While the new episode referenced this fan-favorite story, “Parasites Regained” offered more than just a repeat of what viewers already loved.
The episode “Parasites Lost” happened before Leela and Fry got together, and like the emotional season 4 episode “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings,” it explored the possibility of a romance between them. This made “Parasites Lost” unusually touching and sad for a show that’s usually silly and chaotic. Its follow-up, “Parasites Regained,” was more of a lighthearted spoof of the Dune films.
Nibbler’s story arc was enjoyable in the eleventh season of Futurama, but he became less central to the plot in the twelfth and thirteenth seasons. This was unexpected, considering the show previously established that Nibbler is a highly intelligent leader of the Nibblonians, an alien race. He was revealed to have orchestrated the entire series by freezing Fry in the pilot episode, setting all the events in motion a thousand years prior.
Nibbler’s Comeback Is A Reminder of Futurama’s Massive Supporting Cast
Okay, so Nibbler – a seriously important character in the whole Futurama universe – was strangely absent for a couple of seasons of the Hulu revival after “Parasites Regained.” But his return in season 14 is a good reminder of just how many fantastic supporting characters this show has! Honestly, it’s tough to fit everyone’s storylines into these shorter, ten-episode seasons, and it reminded me of that weird time they dropped a Christmas episode in August a few years ago. It’s clear they’re juggling a lot!
A lot has changed in TV production since Futurama first aired in 1999, so fans are always happy to get new episodes, even if the seasons are now shorter. These industry changes affect what the show can focus on, which is why the recent Futurama revival on Hulu has less time to develop its smaller characters, like Nibbler, due to the shorter ten-episode seasons.
