I’m really excited! It looks like Funko is trying to do something like what The Lego Movie did – take their collectible figures and turn them into awesome animated movies and TV shows. They’ve partnered with Rideback and Spuree to make it happen, and I’m already imagining all the possibilities!
Rideback, the company behind The LEGO Movie and Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, is teaming up with Spuree, which is developing a new animated Magic Tree House series. Together, they will collaborate with Funko on a variety of original projects, including animated shows, live-action films, combinations of both, and both scripted and unscripted content.
Funko isn’t just known for its Pop! figures; it also owns Lougefly and Mondo. These brands all make collectible items inspired by popular franchises like Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., and many more.
The companies haven’t revealed any specific projects yet. Instead, they shared that their partnership aims to create fresh and engaging stories using Funko’s popular brands and dedicated fanbase, with the goal of developing successful franchises that can expand across various media and products.
A Funko Movie Is Reportedly In Development at Warner Bros.
The announcement arrives alongside initial details about the project. Reports indicate the film will feature characters from many of Funko’s popular franchises, such as Darth Vader, Deadpool, Hellboy, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Care Bears, My Little Pony, and Hello Kitty.
Allison Abbate, then a top executive at Warner Animation Group, was leading the collaboration with Funko. She believed Funko’s unique style would make the movie appealing to a wide range of fans, noting their “fresh take on pop culture.” However, Abbate left Warner Bros. after the 2022 merger with Discovery, and there hasn’t been any news about the Funko movie since.
FIlm and Television Could Help Revive Funko
Funko might be looking to create movies and TV shows based on their characters for a few reasons. Recent reports suggest that sales of their collectibles aren’t as strong as they used to be, and a new film or show could help boost interest in the Funko brand again.
Funko, a company known for its collectible figures based on popular culture, has partnered with Rideback and Spuree to create new stories for its fans. According to Funko CEO Josh Simon, the company has already placed over a billion products into the hands of collectors globally. He believes Rideback’s skill in developing engaging narratives from well-known toys and characters – like Lego and Lilo & Stitch – makes them a perfect collaborator, and together they aim to expand storytelling opportunities for Funko enthusiasts.
Funko has become a hugely popular brand in pop culture, and we believe there’s a great opportunity to create exciting new stories based on their characters,” said Jonathan Eirich, co-CEO of Rideback and co-founder of Spuree. “We want to stay true to what makes Funko special while also exploring fresh and innovative ideas for TV and film.
According to Rideback co-CEO and Spuree co-founder Michael LoFaso, Spuree was created to help creators and rights owners make high-quality content in a smarter and more imaginative way. This new partnership will let them do that on a larger scale, blending cutting-edge production methods with popular and recognizable stories.
