From Weapons To Bring Her Back, I Need To Talk About 2025’s Biggest WTF Horror Moments (So Far)

Caution: This section might reveal significant plot twists from several top horror films of the year. Tread with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!

2025 has been an exceptional year for horror cinema, with both original productions and sequels pushing the boundaries of fear. From various subgenres to countless surprises, filmmakers have delivered pulse-pounding, spine-tingling experiences since January. It’s remarkable that the official start of the spooky season is still weeks away, and if I were to compile a Top 10 list for this year so far, it would likely overlap significantly with my personal favorite horror movies, as these past eight months have proven to be an outstanding period for startling jumps, uncomfortable squirms, unexpected yelps, and the involuntary exclamation of “What the hell?!” when a film truly shocks you.

As Halloween approaches and with plenty more shocking moments expected in upcoming horror flicks, let’s take a moment to appreciate the top-notch chills we’ve experienced this year. If any movies from this list are unfamiliar to you, jot down their titles – they’ll be perfect for those nights when you’re craving something spine-tingling!

Weapons – The Kids Turn On Aunt Gladys

I won’t easily forget the intense atmosphere during the movie screening titled “Weapons,” particularly when young Alex (Cary Christopher) breaks the trinket containing Aunt Gladys’ (Amy Madigan) hair and the 17 abducted children retaliate against their captor. The sheer craziness of watching over a dozen kids shatter doors, windows, and walls in a magical cinematic experience was already overwhelming, but it reached an unprecedented level of insanity when Gladys was brutally dismembered on screen.

Together – The Bathroom Stall Sequence

As a movie enthusiast, I’d admit that the film “Together” falls short in some action-packed sequences, like the chainsaw scene for instance. However, it truly shines when delving into the horrors of Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie’s (Alison Brie) unexpected encounter in an elementary school bathroom stall. A mysterious supernatural force is at play here, aiming to bring them together in an unsettling and agonizing fashion. The scene where they struggle to separate after their sudden break in a long-standing drought is nothing short of a chilling nightmare to behold.

Bring Her Back – Oliver Chews On A Knife

When viewing the movie “Bring Her Back”, experienced horror fans would instantly recognize that it’s a bad idea for Andy (Billy Barratt) to give Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips) a melon sliced on a chef’s knife. However, despite anticipating the grim outcome, nothing fully prepares you for witnessing the child bite down on the blade, causing deep cuts to his mouth. From my own experience, I can attest that watching this scene repeatedly does not lessen the fear it inspires.

Final Destination: Bloodlines – Erik Gets Penetrated And Folded In An MRI Machine

The delight of the Final Destination series in general lies in the fact that each death carries a large dose of shocking, “what just happened?” energy. However, what sets Final Destination: Bloodlines apart is that it includes an unforgettable moment. Erik (Richard Harmon), who wasn’t supposed to die, finds himself in a perilous situation because his secret infidelity places him outside the Campbell/Reyes family tree that Death is targeting. But just because he’s not part of the main group doesn’t mean he escapes Death’s attention. He attempts to help his brother Bobby (Owen Patrick Joyner) exploit a loophole, but the outcome leads to him being trapped in an overly powerful MRI machine and crushed, with a wheelchair accidentally piercing through his body.

The Rule Of Jenny Pen – Dave Tortures Tony

A film doesn’t have to be excessively violent or sensational to provoke exclamations like “Oh my goodness,” and The Rule of Jenny Pen certainly fits the bill. John Lithgow’s character, Dave Crealy, is as cruel as any villain depicted in modern horror films, and his mistreatment of fellow patient Tony Garfield (George Henare) is difficult to bear. The humiliation of having Tony interact with a baby puppet is distressing, but the discomfort intensifies when Dave begins pulling on his victim’s catheter.

28 Years Later – Alpha Rips Off Erik’s Head

If you’ve seen “28 Days Later”, you might have expected “28 Years Later” to be laden with intense violence and gore. However, if someone claimed they predicted the sheer abundance of decapitations, I would find that hard to believe. Decapitation is a preferred method of killing by the enormous Alphas that inhabit the British Isles, and there’s nothing more unsettling than when one of these behemoths tears off Erik (Edvin Ryding)’s skull after he shoots and kills the mother of its child.

The Monkey – The Death Of Aunt Ida

Similar to the abundance of thrilling scenes in “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” there are numerous instances in “The Monkey” that could be discussed today. I could have selected the scene where Ricky (Rohan Campbell) is attacked by bees, the woman in the pool who unexpectedly detonates, Chip Zimmer (Osgood Perkins) getting run over while asleep in his sleeping bag, or even the appearance of the Pale Horseman towards the end. However, I’ve decided to focus on Aunt Ida’s (Sarah Levy) last night, which is particularly striking. From descending her home’s stairs brandishing a large gun to having lures splashed in her face, setting her hair ablaze, and colliding headlong into a sharp wooden lawn sign.

Companion – Electric Wine Opener

The “Chekov’s Electric Wine Opener” in the movie “Companion” might not exist, but it’s a fitting description for an unexpected and significant scene. When this strange device appears early in the film, it seems destined to play a crucial role later on, and the film delivers when it is indeed used by Sophie Thatcher’s character Iris to penetrate Jack Quaid’s character Josh’s skull.
