From Star Reveals Storyline That Needs To Happen Before The Series Finale (And 1 Ending They Won’t Accept)

Be warned: This article contains spoilers for episode 6 of From season 4, titled “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” Before the show ends, Elizabeth Saunders shares her hopes for what will happen in the remaining episodes.

MGM+ has renewed the horror series From for a fifth and final season, which will premiere after season 4. As season 4—the second to last—progresses, the story is rapidly nearing its conclusion, and each episode reveals new information, finally addressing some of the show’s biggest mysteries.

I was reading an interview with Hannah Saunders over at ScreenRant about the final season of From, and it got me thinking. The interviewer, Tatiana Hullender, asked Hannah what she’d still love to explore with her character, Donna Raines, before the show wraps up. Apparently, Hannah’s really interested in showing us Donna’s life before she got stuck in that creepy town, and really digging into why she needs those connections with other people. Here’s what she had to say:

I’m excited to share some of the character development with viewers. I have ideas about what shaped Donna into the person she is. We’re also looking at the universal need for human connection – the idea that everyone needs each other. That’s a key lesson for Donna, and I hope she learns it. I’m open to how she gets there, whether through hardship or a life-changing experience. Ultimately, I just want to see her continue to grow and understand that she’s not alone.

As a huge fan of the show, I was really excited to hear what the showrunner, Saunders, had to say about tying up loose ends. She talked about finally revealing Donna’s backstory, both what shaped her and what’s coming for her, but even more intriguing, she hinted at answers to the biggest mysteries – like where this strange town even came from and what truly terrifies everyone who lives there. It sounds like the finale is going to be packed with revelations!

It’s challenging because there are so many possibilities, and I often find myself wondering what the right solution is. I spend a lot of time researching and thinking, both online and internally, trying to solve the problem. I usually don’t find a definitive answer, but then I’ll come across something that makes me think, “Maybe this is it!”

I’m really fascinated by the origins of everything – particularly where these fears come from. That’s just the beginning, though. Once I find one answer, I’ll immediately want to know everything. I’m curious about how this town came to be, and what forces shaped it.

When asked about the possibility of the show ending with Donna waking up from a dream, co-creator Saunders firmly stated, “It absolutely shouldn’t be that.” This idea had already been ruled out when Emmanuel Noisette spoke with the show’s creator, John Griffin, and showrunner, Jeff Pinkner. They confirmed the characters are not in purgatory and are, in fact, not dead.

As a movie lover, I’m really hoping the show dives deeper into everyone’s pasts, not just Donna’s! We’ve gotten little hints about who these people were before they got stuck in that strange town – like Boyd being in the army, or Jim and Tabitha losing their son – but it’s mostly just been talked about. I’d love to see those stories unfold through flashbacks. It feels like with almost every character in From, there’s a rich backstory just waiting to be explored.

Very little is known about Donna except that she came to town with her sister, who tragically died on their first night, before Boyd, Abby, and Ellis found themselves stranded. While there’s still a possibility of learning more about her, time is running short – with only four episodes remaining in season four and a likely ten-episode season five – to fully explore her backstory. It’s more probable that the show will focus on her growing need for connection, particularly her developing relationship with the Matthews family.

As a big fan of From, I was so relieved Donna survived her heart attack! It looks like she’s going to be a central figure in the rest of season four, and probably season five as well. Knowing Donna, she won’t hold back about what she thinks of Boyd and Jade Herrera’s risky plan to explore those tunnels where the creatures hide during the day – she’s always very vocal with her opinions, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how she reacts.

From season 4 releases new episodes on Sundays on MGM+.
