Freakier Friday Confirms A Theory I Always Had About Jake, And Chad Michael Murray Told Me His True Thoughts About It

SPOILERS are ahead for the ending of Freakier Friday.

With the arrival of the “Freakier Friday” premiere, it’s now appropriate to delve into the delightful character advancements in the follow-up. During a conversation with Chad Michael Murray at the Los Angeles press event for “Freakier Friday”, I posed a question about an aspect related to Jake that I had merely speculated could be left over from the initial film as potential lingering issues.

In the most recent films released in 2025, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, a mother-daughter duo. This time, however, they find themselves inhabiting the bodies of two teenagers – one being Anna’s daughter. The teenagers, now in adult forms, aim to disrupt Anna’s upcoming marriage that would make them sisters. This situation brings Chad Michael Murray’s character, Jake, back into the story, as he becomes instrumental in using Anna’s high school sweetheart to separate them. Here’s a quote from Murray about this intriguing plot twist:

Initially, when the idea for the sequel popped up, I found myself chatting with Kristen Burr, one of our producers, and I casually suggested, “Let’s discuss Jake since it’s been around two decades. You know, what has he been up to?” In my mind, I always imagined that he might have a tribute to Tess hidden somewhere in his home. A touch of madness perhaps, concealed within his heart, something he could never completely shake off from his past.

In the amusing record store scene hinted at in the latest trailer, Harper and Lily – occupying Anna and Tess’s bodies – attempt to flirt with Jake, only to discover that his affection is no longer for his high school sweetheart, but rather Jamie Lee Curtis’ character. As Murray explained during our conversation, he had always believed he harbored secret feelings for her and even maintained a shrine in her honor. Continuing in the interview, Murray elaborated…

I really enjoyed that aspect, because she always seemed effortlessly cool, no matter what. Even towards the end of the movie when Jake said, “I see your mom, and I like her… you know, not in that way, but you get the picture?” That whole scene still stands out to me. And boy, do I remember it! She was just so cool, right? Jamie carried herself with an undeniable cool aura. I believe Jake developed feelings for her, which is why he said that. So, we decided to explore that dynamic further. So, I suggested, “Let’s develop that angle.

Initially, I thought Jake and Tess’ connection resembled Jake falling for Anna but in the wrong body. However, upon multiple viewings of the movie, I realized that he didn’t suit Anna as well as with her mother. In the sequel, it’s delightful to see they choose to delve into the fact that he was actually drawn to Tess all along. Murray even supports this, and it adds a humorous touch to the sequel.

The final touch, you might say, was when he showed up at Anna’s wedding at the very end, accompanied by a lady who bore an uncanny resemblance to Tess, the character from the initial film.

The movie certainly delivers on what fans want, earning a rating of 4 out of 5 stars in our Freakier Friday review. It’s predicted to have a strong start at the box office during its opening weekend. In an exclusive interview with Murray, he discussed filming the scene involving Britney Spears when he was just 19 years old.
