Stranger Things, a popular series on Netflix, is well-known for its realistic portrayal of the 1970s and 80s. The show’s creators were inspired by the horror and science fiction stories of that time, and particularly by the work of Stephen King.
The fifth and final season of the show is arriving soon, and the creators have gone all out to make the ending unforgettable. They’re even releasing it in theaters and have brought on an Academy Award-nominated director to help. At the premiere in Los Angeles on November 6th, creator Darabont hinted that his episodes will include some enjoyable hidden references to Stephen King’s work.
When asked if he connected with the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, through their shared admiration for Stephen King, the filmmaker hinted that there’s a hidden surprise for fans. He explained they included a short clip from one of his earliest films – a brief moment from his very first screen credit.
The Academy Award-nominated director began his career in 1984 with the short film The Woman in the Room. Fittingly, his first directing project was based on a story by Stephen King. The Woman in the Room was adapted from King’s short story of the same name, originally published in his 1978 collection Night Shift. His first full-length movie was the made-for-TV horror film Buried Alive, released in 1990, and it wasn’t based on any of King’s work.
I was so thrilled when he finally started getting the recognition he deserved with his next two films, especially The Green Mile in 1999! Both of those stories earned him an Oscar nomination for his incredible writing. It was amazing to see him then adapt…
Frank Darabont Teased Intense David Harbour Scene
I was really impressed by the director’s work on the series finale – he actually directed two of the episodes, “The Turnbow Trap” and “Shock Jock”! He mentioned wanting to raise the stakes, and he really delivered. There’s this one scene, which he said is his favorite, where Harbour is interrogating Alex Breaux’s character, Lt. Akers. He described them both as ‘alpha dogs’ and explained he specifically wanted to create more tension and conflict between those two characters, and it absolutely shows!
He described filming the scene as incredibly exciting and said it was a particular favorite. Darabont also expressed his admiration for both actors involved, and the entire cast, emphasizing how much he enjoyed working with such talented and professional people.
The actor recently echoed sentiments he shared when he returned to acting. He mentioned that he and his wife loved the show, and explained that while many current TV shows focus on negativity and greed, “Stranger Things” stands out for its genuine heart and positive message, which really resonated with him.
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I’m so excited to share that Season 5 kicks off November 26th! It’s going to be released in three batches, so mark your calendars: the next set of episodes drops on December 25th, and the final ones arrive on December 31st. I can’t wait!
