FOX Officially Loses ‘911’ Series Rights – But the Show Goes on Elsewhere

I’m really disappointed to hear that FOX has lost the rights to *9-1-1: Lone Star*, but I’m holding out hope it’ll find a new home on another streaming service. It started as a spin-off of the original *9-1-1* with Angela Bassett and Peter Krause, which premiered way back on January 19, 2020. We got five amazing seasons out of it, and the very last episode aired on February 3, 2025. Hopefully, this isn’t the end for Owen and the team!

Ryan Murphy, the creator of *9-1-1: Lone Star*, revealed in October 2024 that Season 5 would be the show’s last. He explained that the show wasn’t profitable for Disney, as it aired on the Fox network. Despite the cancellation, the series concluded successfully, wrapping up all storylines and giving each character a satisfying ending. After five seasons, news surfaced that FOX was losing the rights to the *9-1-1* spin-off.

FOX no longer has the rights to the show *9-1-1: Lone Star*. They removed it from their website today, September 24, 2025, confirming the end of their broadcasting agreement.

As a big fan of *9-1-1: Lone Star*, I was bummed to hear FOX is losing the streaming rights. That means Season 5 isn’t on FOXNOW anymore, and the last episodes will be heading over to Disney and Hulu. It’s a big change, and Disney will even be taking over the show’s social media pages now too!

You won’t find Season 5 on FOXNOW, but if you’ve been watching 9-1-1: Lone Star for a while, you can still stream all previous seasons on Hulu.

When FOX cancelled *9-1-1* in May 2023, ABC quickly stepped in to continue the show. Season 7 aired as part of ABC’s 2023-2024 lineup, and strong ratings and a dedicated fanbase led to a renewal for Season 8. The show, *9-1-1*, will return to ABC for its ninth season on October 9, 2025.

FOX attempted to follow up the success of *9-1-1* with *Rescue HI-Surf*, a similar show about lifeguards in Hawaii, but it was cancelled after just one season.

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, *9-1-1: Lone Star* is a drama series that follows the challenging lives of firefighters, paramedics, and police officers in Austin, Texas. The show stars Rob Lowe, Liv Tyler, Ronen Rubinstein, Sierra McClain, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Rafael L. Silva, and Brian Michael Smith.

Will 9-1-1: Lone Star Ever Return?

The show *9-1-1: Lone Star* concluded the *9-1-1* series on FOX, and appropriately, the finale allowed the show to finish the storylines of the firefighters at Austin’s Firehouse 126.

Even so, many fans are hoping to see the cast return in future projects, or even a sixth season. This is especially likely given the success of the main *9-1-1* show on ABC, and the fact that both shows exist within the same fictional universe.

In the eighth season of *9-1-1*, a storyline involved Eddie Diaz moving to Texas and leaving his post at Firehouse 118 in Los Angeles. Many viewers hoped this would lead to a crossover event with the team from *Lone Star*, but that didn’t materialize. However, there’s still a chance it could happen in the future.

Because the main characters on *9-1-1: Lone Star* are still alive, a future crossover is possible. This is even more likely now that a new spin-off, *9-1-1: Nashville*, is coming to ABC.

Tim Minear, a co-creator of *9-1-1*, hinted to Entertainment Weekly that a crossover event involving *9-1-1: Lone Star*, *Nashville*, and the original *9-1-1* series is a possibility, noting that the network is very interested in the idea.

Okay, here’s a glimmer of good news for fans of *9-1-1: Lone Star*. The rights to the show have already gone back to Disney and Hulu, which means there’s a real possibility we could see it revived – or at least find a home for it somewhere. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s definitely a positive sign after the cancellation.
