Rumors suggest Wario might appear in the next Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A description shared by a movie theater chain seems to reveal that Wario – a popular character who hasn’t been in any Mario movies yet – will join forces with Bowser Jr. in the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, this information hasn’t been officially confirmed, so it’s best to view it with some skepticism.
Given how close we are to the movie’s release, and the fact that a character like Wario would be a big draw for publicity, it’s reasonable to doubt the claim about his role. If Wario does show up, it’s probably just a quick appearance, like a cameo or a scene after the credits.
Even though the movie might not have a typical villain, there’s likely a hidden antagonist. Several possibilities exist, and one in particular seems more likely given where the story appears to be going.
Wart Makes More Sense Than Wario If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Hiding A Secret Villain
First released in 1988, The Super Mario Bros. 2 takes Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach on an adventure to stop Wart, a villainous, toad-like leader. Wart used a machine called the Dream Machine to take over Subcon, a dream world, and the game follows the heroes’ journey to defeat him as the ultimate boss.
Wart hasn’t been a major character in Mario games since his debut in the 1988 NES classic, though he’s made brief appearances. However, the new Super Mario Bros. Movie might change that. Trailers show Princess Peach in a casino filled with characters from Super Mario Bros. 2, potentially opening the door for Wart to make a comeback.
The heroes in Subcon face enemies like Clawgrip, Birdo, and Mouser, all of whom also appear in the casino scene from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Because the movie seems to have heavily borrowed from this game for that area, it’s possible we might see Wart appear as well.
Given that one of the worlds in The Super Mario Bros. Movie seems inspired by Super Mario Bros. 2, it’s likely its boss character will appear as well. This means Princess Peach’s fight with Birdo and others could lead to a final showdown with Wart, who might be the ruler of that particular world.
Wart, a boss from an older Super Mario game, hasn’t been featured prominently in recent titles. This means many younger viewers might not know who he is, making him a somewhat unexpected choice for the movie. However, including him actually fits well with the overall direction the filmmakers have taken.
The marketing for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is packed with references to Super Mario games throughout the years. This shows they’re not only featuring popular characters like Rosalina, but also including more obscure nods to delight longtime fans. A cameo from Wart would be a perfect example of this kind of fan service.
