Okay, huge spoiler alert for Ghosts Season 5, Episode 6, “Planes, Shanes and Automobiles”! As a big fan, I’ve noticed something about the show, and this episode finally acknowledges it. It’s cool that CBS is planning a Thanksgiving episode for Season 5 – it’s the first time they’ve done that in five seasons! But instead of the usual setup where Sam, Jay, and the ghosts get thrown into a random Thanksgiving crisis, this episode actually tries something different with the characters and puts them in genuinely new situations. It’s a nice change of pace!
When Jay and Sam’s Thanksgiving plans fell through, they decided to host a small celebration at Woodstone Mansion – something they hadn’t done since moving from New York. But before they could enjoy the holiday, Sam had to fly to Chicago for a book signing, leaving Jay in charge of the ghosts – a difficult task since he can’t see them. Though he assures Sam he’ll look after their ghostly friends, he quickly confesses he has a different plan in mind.

On the way to Samantha’s book signing, it’s clear that Jay isn’t keeping his promise to handle things with the ghosts, as seen in the sixth episode of Ghosts season 5. Back at home, the ghosts surround him, upset that he hasn’t been doing the tasks they assigned him. Trevor tries to jog his memory with a text message, but Jay admits he’s completely ignored their requests.
He believes Sam has been too accommodating to their ghostly friends, always giving in to what they want. As a result, they often walk all over her. While some people have complained, it’s hard to disagree with Jay – ever since Sam settled into Woodstone Mansion and accepted the ghosts, they’ve been exploiting her abilities as a living person.
This caused Sam a lot of problems, ranging from minor inconveniences to serious difficulties. Sometimes, Sam and Jay struggled to keep their housemates happy. They even disagreed about how to deal with the spirits. When Sam isn’t around, Jay is better able to set and enforce his personal limits.
Sam Needs To Have Better Boundaries In Ghosts
Sam is fundamentally a kind person, but it’s understandably hard for her to resist the ghosts when they can directly talk to her – unlike Jay, who can ignore them since he can’t see them. However, it’s not good for anyone – Sam or the spirits – if they don’t establish healthy boundaries. Ultimately, Sam needs to prioritize her own well-being and Jay’s, as they have their whole lives ahead of them. She can continue to help the ghosts at Woodstone Mansion without completely exhausting herself.
It’s also important that the ghosts don’t get too much of what they want, so they can learn to behave when people are around. Even though others can’t see them, their mischievous behavior can be really distracting for Sam when she’s with other people, making her seem odd or unstable. Finding a good balance for the ghosts is the ideal solution in Ghosts.
