The much-anticipated remake may not happen after all, as recent reports suggest Square Enix has cancelled the project.
Final Fantasy 9 is the last remaining unannounced game from a large list discovered in a 2021 data leak of NVIDIA GeForce Now. The leak revealed many titles, and most have since been officially confirmed – including remakes of Final Fantasy Tactics and Chrono Cross, and even Kingdom Hearts 4. Final Fantasy 9 is the only title from that list that hasn’t been formally announced yet.
Final Fantasy 9 Remake May Be Canceled
Lots of rumors suggest there are problems developing the remake of *Final Fantasy 9*, which might be why Square Enix hasn’t officially announced it yet. According to NateTheHate on Twitter (now X), there’s no new information about the game, and he believes development has likely been halted, possibly for good.
Have no new information to share.
For now, I’d assume the game is on ice & the unknown is whether SqEx will return to it or not.

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this leak, but honestly, I’m trying not to get *too* excited. We still don’t even know for sure if they’re *making* a Final Fantasy 9 remake! But if this leak is accurate, it sounds like the remake might actually be cancelled, which would be incredibly disappointing. I’m hoping it’s just a rumor, but it’s definitely got me worried.
What’s Going On With The Final Fantasy 9 Remake?
There was once a big plan to revive *Final Fantasy 9*, including an animated series. Unfortunately, the studio working on it went bankrupt, and the project was cancelled.
Next year will be the 25th anniversary of *Final Fantasy 9*, and fans were expecting Square Enix to announce a remake. Unfortunately, nothing official has been revealed yet; the celebration has mainly focused on things like merchandise and artwork.
The status of the *Final Fantasy 9* remake is currently unknown. While Square Enix frequently releases updated versions of its classic games, a pause in development – especially during the game’s anniversary year – suggests the project is either significantly delayed or facing serious quality issues that could harm the franchise’s reputation.
