First launched in 2001, Final Fantasy X is still considered one of the most important role-playing games of all time, and it’s celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026. As the first major Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 2, it was a huge step forward for Square, featuring fully spoken conversations, memorable cinematic scenes, detailed 3D worlds, and incredibly realistic facial expressions that amazed players at the time.
Final Fantasy X (FFX) wasn’t just technologically impressive; its story continues to connect with fans. The unique turn-based combat and Sphere Grid system are still considered highlights of the series. The game’s popularity also cemented the PlayStation 2’s position as the go-to console for Japanese role-playing games and inspired many games that followed.
Despite being released 25 years ago, Final Fantasy 10 remains popular, especially with the Final Fantasy X & X-2 HD Remaster. To celebrate this milestone, Square Enix has released a new trailer on YouTube and announced an upcoming event, as reported by Silicon Era.
Fans of Final Fantasy can now enjoy a remastered version of Final Fantasy X/X-2 on Nintendo Switch 2 starting July 23rd, just in time for the game’s 25th anniversary! The HD Remake will be available digitally from the Nintendo Store for $49.99 and is the first of many announcements Square Enix has planned to celebrate this milestone.
The trailer debuted yesterday to mark the 25th anniversary of the game, showcasing beloved scenes from its memorable story and building excitement for the release of Final Fantasy X/X-2 on Switch 2. New merchandise is also available now on Amazon, and Square Enix will be holding a special exhibition called ‘Final Fantasy X Museum – Memories of Pyreflies’ in Tokyo from September 12th to 27th, 2026.
This special event will display unique behind-the-scenes content, including early concept art and rare items from the making of a fan-favorite game. There will also be an exclusive shop with anniversary merchandise available only at the event.
Square Enix hasn’t announced everything that will be at the exhibit yet, but they’ll share more details about tickets, merchandise, and the full lineup as the opening date gets closer. They’re also asking fans to submit their artwork and favorite memories of Final Fantasy 10, and some of these submissions will be featured in the exhibit.
