Face/Off 2 has received an alarming update.
Released in 1997, Face/Off is a sci-fi action thriller from Paramount Pictures. The film, directed by John Woo, features John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in leading roles as Sean Archer and Castor Troy, respectively.
The idea of a new Face/Off movie first surfaced in 2019. However, by 2021, plans had changed, and it was revealed the project would be a sequel, not a remake. Adam Wingard, the director behind films like The Guest (2014) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), was set to direct.
What is the update on Face/Off 2?
Despite a lack of recent updates, Collider reports that director Adam Wingard has left the Face/Off 2 project.
Despite recent setbacks, Paramount Pictures hasn’t completely abandoned the idea of a Face/Off sequel. They’re now open to hearing new pitches from filmmakers, suggesting the project isn’t canceled – at least not yet. It’s currently unknown why director Adam Wingard decided to leave the film.
Although we don’t know when Face/Off 2 will be released, you can currently watch the original Face/Off on Paramount+ and The Criterion Channel.
The movie follows FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) who is determined to capture terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage). After tracking Troy to a plane that crashes in Los Angeles, and believing Troy may be dead, Archer undergoes radical plastic surgery to take on Troy’s face. He hopes this disguise will allow him to get information about an upcoming bomb threat from Troy’s brother. However, Troy survives and, while in a coma, forces the surgeon to give him Archer’s face.
