As a cinema enthusiast, it’s fascinating to see how the mythological heroes and deities of old have laid the groundwork for today’s superheroes. It’s no wonder that many of these iconic characters have found their way into comic books. Take Thor, for instance, who is more recognized for his epic battles alongside the Avengers rather than his humorous portrayal in The Sandman. Similarly, there are characters synonymous with DC Comics that can also be found within the Marvel universe. One such character graces the screen in the animated series Eyes of Wakanda, lending credence to their presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In the second installment of Eyes of Wakanda, titled ‘Legends and Lies,’ we find ourselves during the last year of the Trojan War. The plot revolves around B’kai, a secret agent from Wakanda who, under the pseudonym Memnon, developed a close bond with the Greek hero Achilles, even fighting alongside him. However, B’kai was not there for camaraderie; he was after a Vibranium necklace that had been given to Helen of Troy and was hidden somewhere in this conflict.
In the attack on the city, B’kai and Achilles encounter and overpower a group of female warriors. These warriors, although not explicitly named in the scene, are referred to as Amazons in the subtitles. This could seem surprising since Amazons are often linked with Wonder Woman and DC Comics. However, it is worth noting that Amazons exist within the Marvel universe too. Furthermore, their representation in Eyes of Wakanda aligns with their portrayal in both comic book lore and Ancient Greek mythology.
Amazons history in myth and Marvel Comics
In various tales about the Trojan War, it is often described that a group of Amazons, led by their queen Penthesilea, fought alongside Troy. These narratives state that Penthesilea brought twelve of her people into combat, but ultimately met her end at the hands of Achilles. Some stories hint that Achilles developed feelings for Penthesilea from afar, although this is not depicted in the Eyes of Wakanda. However, the Amazon forces in this story consist of thirteen warriors.
Just as the Amazon women from DC Comics had their city, Themyscira, nestled on a mythical island, the Marvel counterparts had their city, Themiscyra, situated along the Thermodon River in an area that is now contemporary Turkey instead. Unlike the Amazons of DC, who were born from clay by the Greek goddesses, those in Marvel comics were said to have been born from Ares, a significant difference as Ares was the sworn enemy of the DC Amazons.
In 2009’s Trojan War miniseries in the Marvel Universe, it was depicted how the Amazons fell at Troy. In this rendition, Penthesilea and the remaining Amazonians entered the war to seek redemption for an unfortunate hunting accident that led to the death of her sister, Hippolyta. This chain of events was instigated by Athena, who supported Achilles, causing frustration for Ares. However, Ares persuaded the gods to grant the Amazons a noble position on Mount Olympus.
In contemporary times, both the Amazons and Hippolyta were reborn following a deal struck between Hela and Pluto. Later on, Hippolyta founded a fresh Amazonian territory, New Amazonia, situated on an island smack dab in the Mediterranean Sea. Since then, they’ve been relatively scarce, often butting heads with Hercules, who at one point was married to Hippolyta. They also surfaced in Deadpool when Wade Wilson was tasked with snatching Hippolyta’s cherished statue from the temple of New Amazonia.
