Excuse Me, But Where’s My Hawkgirl Movie After Isabela Merced’s Scene-Stealing Performance In Superman?

Upon learning about the cast for the Superman movie, I have to admit I had reservations about how writer/director James Gunn would handle the introduction of the new Steel Man and include members of the Justice League. Although the execution wasn’t flawless, I was surprised by my growing interest in the secondary characters, despite my initial apprehensions towards them prior to the film’s release. There is even one character I am eagerly anticipating a standalone movie for: Hawkgirl.

I Want More Of Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl After Her Appearance In Superman

I’ve been quite fond of Isabela Merced for a while now. She was fantastic in “The Last Of Us”, and I also enjoyed her performance in “Turtles All The Way Down”. Initially, with such a star-studded cast in “Superman”, I wasn’t expecting much from her role as Hawkgirl. But two weeks after watching the movie, I can’t help but reflect on the impact she made on the film.

In just a handful of appearances, Hawkgirl truly shone and left a lasting impression, boasting one of the standout scenes in the film: her triumphant takedown of President Vasil Ghurkos following her iconic line, “I’m not Superman.” This brief introduction to the character has piqued my interest, leaving me eager for more. However, upon glancing at the list of forthcoming DC movies post-Superman, I was dismayed to discover that a Hawkgirl movie is nowhere to be found. Why on earth?

I Know The Next Hawkgirl Appearance Is Lined Up, But I Need More Than That

Isabela Merced won’t be abandoned in her role. It’s confirmed that she will appear in Season 2 of Peacemaker, and Merced herself mentioned that she’ll explore Hawkgirl’s connection to Maxwell Lord, portrayed by Sean Gunn. Frankly, I’m weary of talented female superheroes being relegated to minor roles, especially when there’s a chance to shine the spotlight on them. For years, I’ve yearned for Hollywood to bring Hawkgirl’s story to life, and I hope Merced’s portrayal will finally make that dream a reality.

According to Merced’s explanation, Hawkgirl possesses a particularly grim history, yet James Gunn’s superhero films have consistently tackled heavy themes without flinching. Gunn’s unique talent lies in seamlessly merging the somber with the action-packed. Throughout her many portrayals, Hawkgirl is identified as Kendra Saunders, an individual reborn from alien origins. In the comics, tragedy strikes Kendra deeply; not only did she take her own life, but her parents were previously murdered by corrupt police officers. Although she retains Kendra’s memories, she shares little else in common with previous versions of Hawkgirl aside from combat skills.

Additionally, I’m quite keen on witnessing the captivating love story between Hawkgirl and Hawkman being translated to screen. Interestingly, Merced mentioned she’s fond of the romantic dynamics in Justice League: Unlimited, particularly those involving Green Lantern. There’s a wealth of material here waiting to be uncovered. Regardless, I can’t stress enough my need for DC Studios to expedite the production of a Hawkgirl film (or series) at the earliest convenience!
