The Best Summer Movies of 2025
10. Kpop Demon Hunters
This movie has a brilliantly creative idea: a K-pop girl group secretly fights demons, and their biggest challenge yet comes in the form of a demonic boy band! *Kpop Demon Hunters* is a blast with vibrant animation and surprisingly addictive songs. My daughters are obsessed, constantly asking how they can become demon-hunting K-pop stars. It’s so fun, I even find myself wishing I could join them after watching it!
9. The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Marvel’s new Fantastic Four movie, *First Steps*, is a clear upgrade from the previous four attempts by Roger Corman and 20th Century Fox. Honestly, it couldn’t have been worse! Those earlier films ranged from just okay to truly bad. *First Steps* stands out with beautiful visuals and a compelling villain – Galactus, a powerful being who wants to devour Earth, simply because he’s lonely and hungry. While the Fantastic Four themselves aren’t particularly striking, the movie feels like a strong start for Marvel’s First Family within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
8. Elio
Okay, so I just saw Pixar’s newest film, and it was a really sweet story. It’s about this orphaned kid, Elio, who ends up in the middle of an alien federation. They accidentally think *he’s* Earth’s ambassador and stick him in this crazy negotiation with this really intimidating galactic conqueror – Brad Garrett totally nails the voice, by the way. Honestly, like a lot of Pixar movies, I think the adults might actually get more out of it than the kids. It’s got a surprisingly touching message about what it means to be a father and letting your kids figure things out on their own. But seriously, can we talk about Elio’s alien best friend, Glordon? He’s easily the best – and cutest – sidekick I’ve seen in a movie all summer!
7. Ballerina
To put it simply, the first *John Wick* spinoff, *Ballerina*, exceeded expectations. Considering the long development process, post-production delays, and reports of reshoots, I wasn’t expecting much. The first half of the movie felt slow and serious, just as I’d anticipated. But around the one-hour mark, the film completely changes gears. The rest of *Ballerina* is incredibly fun, featuring at least three action sequences that are as thrilling, inventive, and darkly funny as anything in the four *John Wick* films. What’s more, *Ballerina* feels like a genuine extension of the *John Wick* universe, expanding the world and even including a brief but important appearance by Keanu Reeves as John Wick himself.
6. F1
When someone calls a movie “old-fashioned,” it’s usually not a good thing. It suggests the film feels outdated and slow. But Joseph Kosinski’s *F1* is different – it’s wonderfully old-fashioned! It reminds you of the classic, big-budget blockbusters from the 80s and 90s, which focused on impressive visuals and charismatic stars like Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem, rather than relying on existing franchises. While it’s not perfect, *F1* is definitely not slow-paced. The story is a bit predictable, but honestly, a movie about Formula One racing should have *some* formula, right?
5. Highest 2 Lowest
After more than ten years, director Spike Lee and actor Denzel Washington team up again in *Highest 2 Lowest*, a crime story inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s classic film *High and Low*. The film centers on a music executive (Washington) who faces a difficult decision when his employee’s son is mistakenly kidnapped. A criminal (A$AP Rocky) intended to kidnap the executive’s own child and now demands a huge ransom, potentially ruining the mogul financially. Featuring a thrilling chase scene set in the subway – reminiscent of *The French Connection* – and sharp, intense conversations between Washington and Rocky, *Highest 2 Lowest* feels like a return to form from two iconic filmmakers.
4. 28 Years Later
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the team behind the groundbreaking zombie film *28 Days Later*, return to the genre with *28 Years Later*. This isn’t just a simple, money-making sequel, though. While it delivers the gore and intense action fans expect – including some creatively shot kills using iPhone technology – the new film is surprisingly thoughtful and even a bit sad. In fact, the ending is deliberately bleak and likely to leave some viewers unsatisfied, not as a setup for another movie, but because it reflects the often frustrating reality of life.
3. Weapons
If Zach Cregger asks you to come down to his basement, seriously, just leave! He clearly has a thing for creepy spaces, and his new movie, *Weapons*, is no exception. It takes place in the quiet suburbs of Pennsylvania, where the mysterious disappearance of 17 elementary school students kicks off a complex, interconnected story. We follow the teacher (Julia Garner), a father of one of the missing kids (Josh Brolin), a troubled police officer (Alden Ehrenreich), and others as they try to uncover what happened. *Weapons* jumps between different characters and their perspectives, creating a tone that’s both unsettling and surprisingly funny. Think of it as *Pulp Fiction*, but as a horror movie – a darkly comedic and thrilling ride we didn’t know we wanted.
2. Superman
Okay, look, I know comparing any DC film to Richard Donner’s *Superman* feels sacrilegious, but James Gunn’s new take actually holds up surprisingly well. Nicholas Hoult *kills* it as Lex Luthor – he’s brilliantly self-absorbed and fragile, a genuinely compelling villain. And the supporting cast? Fantastic. Edi Gathegi is perfect as Mr. Terrific, and honestly, Krypto the superdog almost steals the whole show – he’s adorable and delightfully disobedient. But the real win is David Corenswet as Superman. He’s incredibly charming and portrays a wonderfully vulnerable hero that you genuinely want to root for. It’s a fun, exciting, and even romantic film, with a little bit of smart social commentary thrown in. More importantly, it feels like a real reset for DC, and sets a seriously high bar for the universe they’re building – which is exactly what we needed.
1. The Naked Gun
If you need a good laugh, check out the 2025 film *The Naked Gun*. It’s 85 minutes of constant humor, packed with visual gags, silly puns, and outrageous jokes. It’s a fantastic revival of the classic franchise and one of the best updates we’ve seen in recent years – it’s no surprise it’s doing well in theaters, and you might even want to see it twice to catch everything!
Liam Neeson stars as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic character. He’s just as clumsy and determined as his father, tasked with solving a case involving a villainous businessman (Danny Huston). Throughout the film, Drebin shares hilarious internal thoughts, including a particularly memorable observation about his love interest, Pamela Anderson (“a bottom that would make any toilet beg for the brown”). *The Naked Gun* proves that spoof comedies – and comedies in theaters in general – still have a lot to offer.
