Let’s be honest, most video game movies these days are aiming for an older audience. But Nintendo and Universal seem to understand something crucial: appeal to everyone, and you’ll see bigger returns. That’s why I’m excited about The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, hitting theaters April 1st – and it’s no April Fool’s joke! Nintendo just dropped a new teaser, and the biggest takeaway? Yoshi is officially in the game, which is fantastic news for fans like me.
It’s easy to see why everyone is excited, especially after how well the little hint of Yoshi in the first movie was received. While hearing Yoshi speak took some getting used to, I’m still thrilled to see the character brought to life in animated form. However, we didn’t actually see a lot of Yoshi in the footage, and I was more captivated by all the other references to different games and new elements. So, putting Yoshi aside for a moment, let’s geek out over those other awesome nods to the Mario universe!

The Tostarenans And A Moe-Eye In The Sand Kingdom
The initial trailer prominently featured the inverted pyramid from the Sand Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey. The footage showed the Tostarenans who live there, as well as one of the stone-headed Moe-Eyes, which are inspired by the Moai statues of Easter Island. Considering the kingdom’s design draws from different cultures, it makes sense that Yoshi would appear there, and I’m glad we’ll get to see this beautiful area for a while.
I’m especially excited to see Moe-Eyes in the footage because Mario can possess its bodies with Cappy. It’s a shame there weren’t any Crazy Cap shops in the Sand Kingdom, but even though Cappy isn’t from the Galaxy games, I’m still hoping we’ll see more of him.

Both Mario And Luigi Rocking Fire-Flower Power
The field of Fire Flowers was beautiful in the first movie, but it wasn’t used enough, which was disappointing. It’s great that the sequel fixed this and also showed fans Mario and Luigi with their classic look – white caps and undershirts – preparing to battle their enemies.
While the fireballs seemed to be used more for lighting than attacking, I found it funny to see a frightened Luigi throwing them at something he couldn’t see, and I appreciated the lighter sound effect when they were reignited. Those were good comedic moments. I also expect we’ll see the fire powers used more prominently in a big action scene later in the movie. Given the Jurassic Park nod in the trailer, I wouldn’t be surprised if they included a visual reference to Ron Howard’s 1991 firefighting film Backdraft, which Universal also distributed.

Frog Luigi! Also, Frog Luigi Taking Out A Boss Bass!
It’s great the trailer showed another fun costume transformation so quickly after the Fire Flower! And it’s hilarious that it’s Frog Luigi – he always looks so downcast when he transforms. Come on, Luigi, embrace the frog life!
He really shows off the jumping power of the suit by rescuing Blue Toad from Boss Bass, a recurring underwater enemy. This version of Boss Bass is even bigger than in the games, which makes for a really entertaining animation when Frog Luigi jumps into action. (It also made me realize how unsettling it would be to have your eyeball constantly bulging like that, though!)

Princess Peach Is Facing Off Against Birdo In The Casino
The trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie revealed a colorful casino battle featuring Princess Peach. Now we’ve learned she’ll be fighting Birdo, who attacks with projectile eggs, in addition to the usual enemies. This is our first glimpse of Birdo in the sequel, and it’s exciting to see her use her wings to fly and attack, especially since the casino has an unusual, open roof.
It would be great if Princess Peach pointed out how disgusting it is that Birdo shoots attacks from her mouth – it’s probably covered in bird goo, even if you can’t see it! Also, where does Birdo keep getting all those eggs? Peach really should ask about that.

More Quick Takes
While seeing Yoshi was great, I was even more thrilled by some other details revealed in the new video (linked below). Knowing how many hidden references were in the first movie, it’s awesome to think we’ve only scratched the surface of what this one has to offer. Here are a few more quick thoughts that made me really happy while watching.
- Baby Mario and Luigi from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi Island! If this movie doesn’t make multiple jokes about how godawful the sound of Baby Mario’s crying is, what was the point of anything?
- Those look like the glowing-eyed bats from Super Mario Galaxy seemingly living in the Sand Kingdom’s caves, but I wonder if the pipes in the cave play into their presence and Yoshi’s.
- I hope that Toad’s initial disinterest and discontent with Yoshi’s arrival continues throughout the whole movie, especially if Yoshi’s big dumb smile stays on his face the entire time.
- Should we call that T-Rex scene “The Time A Chris Pratt Character Actually Failed To Calm A Dinosaur Down,” and was this crossover moment really necessary?
Now for anyone who hasn’t yet checked out the new footage, give it a watch below!
I’m so excited! Just a reminder to everyone that The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is officially coming out on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026. Mark your calendars!
