Fans of Game of Thrones might be wondering what’s happening with all the potential spin-off shows that have been discussed. It turns out not all of those projects are still in development. The planned spin-off centered around Jon Snow, for instance, has been put on hold. Kit Harington, the actor who played Jon Snow, said the idea wasn’t working and he had to step away, a sentiment echoed by HBO’s CEO, Casey Bloys.
You might remember hearing about Bloodmoon, a show starring Naomi Watts. It was set thousands of years before the main Game of Thrones series, during an earlier era, and would have shown the events leading up to the war with the White Walkers. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after a pilot episode was filmed. Another planned show, Flea Bottom, would have focused on the lives of people in King’s Landing, but that project was also scrapped.
There’s a lot happening with Game of Thrones! George R.R. Martin has revealed that HBO is working on five or six potential spin-off shows. Currently, two are actively being developed, with four more in the early stages – so keep an eye out for announcements!
‘A Knight of Seven Kingdoms’
Second Season Confirmed for 2027

HBO
A Knight of Seven Kingdoms tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, the young Aegon V Targaryen, nicknamed Egg. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg, which take place roughly 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. George R.R. Martin created the series, and Owen Harris, the director known for his work on Black Mirror and Mrs. Davis, is directing the episodes.
The first season of the show covered the novella The Hedge Knight in six episodes. Interestingly, a second season was approved even before the first one aired! Fans have already learned some details about what to expect in season 2 of A Knight of Seven Kingdoms, which will adapt the next novella, The Sworn Sword.
Ira Parker, the creator of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, told TV Insider in January 2026 that they had already begun filming the second season, completing ten days of shooting before a holiday break. He explained the production schedule was unusual, with breaks for Christmas and the premiere, but he was pleased they’d been able to get those initial ten days of filming completed, as they captured some excellent footage.
‘House of the Dragon’
Season 3 and 4 Confirmed

HBO
HBO’s House of the Dragon was a huge hit, demonstrating continued strong interest in the world of Game of Thrones. The show tells the story of the Targaryen family, set almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and centers on a violent civil war called the Dance of the Dragons. It’s based on parts of George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, and stars Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower. Ryan Condal is the showrunner, with Miguel Sapochnik as an executive producer.
The first season of the show was a hit with critics, and the second season upped the stakes with a grittier, more intense story. HBO is wisely choosing to end the series after four seasons, fully adapting the events from the Fire & Blood book. According to creator Ryan Condal, who spoke with Entertainment Weekly, the show will have a total of four seasons. This means fans will get a complete story without it dragging on too long.
The next seasons promise to be exciting, especially with the long-awaited “Battle of the Gullet” finally arriving. We’re likely to get a general idea of when season three will air around summer 2026, and the final season is currently planned for 2027, though these dates aren’t official yet. The trailer for season three has already generated a lot of buzz among fans.
‘Aegon’s Conquest’
Release Date TBA

HBO
As detailed in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood (published in 2018), Aegon’s Conquest recounts how Aegon took control of Westeros. After the fall of Old Valyria, Aegon, along with his sisters and wives Visenya and Rhaenys, flew to Westeros with their dragons. There, he led a fierce and brutal campaign to unite the Seven Kingdoms and became the first king of Westeros.
Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on projects like Terminator Zero and The Batman Part II, shared on X (formerly Twitter) in July 2025 that he’s written numerous scripts for the upcoming Aegon series. He’s been collaborating directly with George R.R. Martin to choose the most compelling stories to adapt for the screen. The series was initially announced by Variety in April 2023, and Tomlin joined the project as a writer in February 2024.
Viewers starting the Aegon’s Conquest story will already know more about Aegon Targaryen thanks to House of the Dragon. The first season of that show revealed that Aegon had a vision of a devastating, endless winter coming from the North – the future Great War against the White Walkers. He believed dragonfire was the best way to protect the world from this threat.
‘Sea Snake/Nine Voyages’
Release Date TBA

HBO
HBO is working on a new show focusing on Corlys Velaryon, better known as the Sea Snake. The series will explore his legendary nine voyages, detailing how he gained immense wealth and renown. It will also show how he built the Velaryon fleet into the most feared naval force in Westeros.
I was really excited to learn back in 2022 that Bruno Heller – the guy behind the fantastic Rome – was writing the pilot for the Corlys Velaryon series. Apparently, Martin’s a huge fan of Rome, so he must have been thrilled! He shared that the show was originally called Nine Voyages, but they decided on The Sea Snake instead. The reasoning? They didn’t want two spin-offs with numbers in the title, seeing as the other one, focusing on Lysandra, is called Ten Thousand Ships.
The upcoming series promised exciting adventures on the sea, including naval battles, political negotiations, and struggles against the elements, all set in new and unexplored lands beyond Westeros. However, in early 2024, the show’s format changed from live-action to animation because creating realistic sea scenes and regularly featuring new locations would have been too costly, according to George R.R. Martin. Steve Toussaint, who plays a character in House of the Dragon, might return to voice the same role, as he expressed interest in July 2022.
‘Ten Thousand Ships’
Release Date TBA

HBO
“Ten Thousand Ships” is a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” taking place around 1,000 years earlier. It tells the story of Princess Nymeria, the ancestor of House Martell and the founder of Dorne. Nymeria was a legendary warrior briefly mentioned in “Game of Thrones,” and two characters – a Sand Snake (played by Jessica Henwick) and Arya Stark’s direwolf – were named in her honor. The title refers to the massive fleet of 10,000 ships that brought Nymeria and her army from Essos to Dorne. Demonstrating her unwavering commitment, she ordered the entire fleet burned to ensure no one would ever consider retreat.
The future of the series Ten Thousand Ships has been uncertain for some time. In March 2022, creator George R.R. Martin announced Amanda Segel (known for her work on Person of Interest and Shooter) had written a couple of versions of the script, but Brian Helgeland, who was developing the spin-off, later told Inverse that all of that work was discarded. He explained that the time period of his show was considered too different from the main Game of Thrones series. However, in June 2024, Martin surprisingly revealed on his blog that Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Eboni Booth had been brought on to write the pilot episode. He added that she’s been busy with both her award-winning plays and working with him and HBO.
Historical dramas with female leads are rare, making this project a significant step forward for the industry. Viewers can anticipate storylines that champion women, building on the strengths of beloved female characters from Game of Thrones. The series also promises to delve into the previously unexplored culture of Rhoynar, featuring intriguing water magic and lost cities. Ultimately, the show will shed light on the crucial role outsiders played in shaping the history of Westeros.
‘The Golden Empire’
Release Date TBA

HBO
I’m still keeping an eye on The Golden Empire, though honestly, we haven’t gotten much news about it recently. What little we do know is intriguing – it’s supposedly a spin-off heavily inspired by Imperial China, taking place in the ancient and incredibly wealthy empire of Yi Ti, which is located way over in eastern Essos. It’s all very hush-hush right now, but the potential is definitely there.
This unexplored part of the story feels completely separate from what viewers already know, almost like a new show. The land of Yi T wasn’t detailed in the original books, so the show will likely draw information from a lengthy section about it in a companion book published in 2014. Now, the show’s creators will be responsible for bringing to life the huge cities, rulers, and conflicts within Yi T and its surrounding areas, like the Shadow Lands. Let’s hope they succeed in doing so.
Martin shared that he can’t discuss most of the project’s details, but confirmed things are progressing quickly and he’s very excited about the concept art. He also mentioned a talented new writer is contributing to the storyline, though he didn’t disclose their name. He expects more information will be available soon.
