The Christmas episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants prove that you can have winter fun even when you live in the ocean! These episodes are also some of the show’s funniest. SpongeBob SquarePants is considered one of the greatest animated series ever, known for its memorable characters, silly adventures, and varied humor.
SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated series that follows the adventures of SpongeBob and his friends in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom. Over 16 seasons, the show has featured countless hilarious and wacky scenarios, and has also celebrated various holidays like Halloween and Christmas.
Although SpongeBob SquarePants doesn’t have a lot of episodes about Christmas, it features several stories set during winter. It’s funny to think it sometimes snows underwater in Bikini Bottom, but when it does, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward always manage to create their own silly and festive fun, staying true to the show’s wacky style.
1. “Christmas Who?”
Season 2, Episode 8
“Christmas Who?” is the very first Christmas episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. The story begins with Sandy getting ready for the holiday, but SpongeBob and Patrick have never celebrated Christmas before. Sandy explains everything to them, and as usual, SpongeBob gets incredibly enthusiastic and excitedly shares the news with everyone in Bikini Bottom.
The town transforms into a festive Christmas scene, but when Santa doesn’t show up on Christmas morning, Squidward steps in to spread holiday cheer to everyone in Bikini Bottom. This heartwarming turn of events captures the true spirit of Christmas, and it’s especially meaningful because it’s Squidward – of all characters – who truly embraces the holiday spirit.
2. “Survival Of The Idiots”
Season 2, Episode 9
SpongeBob and Patrick visit Sandy’s home to play, but find a shield blocking the entrance with a “Keep Out” sign. They sneak inside and discover Sandy is asleep and unusually large and fluffy. It turns out she’s hibernating for the winter, but SpongeBob and Patrick decide to have fun in her snowy tree dome anyway.
Although playing in the snow feels festive and adds a Christmas vibe to the scene, the noise disturbs Sandy, who gets upset. SpongeBob and Patrick soon regret their fun, as they face her anger and start to feel the chill.
3. “Snowball Effect”
Season 3, Episode 6
In the SpongeBob episode “Snowball Effect,” a sudden iceberg causes a snowstorm in Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob and Patrick start a snowball fight, and eventually, Squidward joins in. They all build forts for protection, but Squidward unexpectedly starts enjoying himself and having fun with the playful chaos.
Even though the setting is a chilly iceberg, the snow creates a festive Christmas atmosphere in this episode. What really makes it special, and one of the best holiday episodes ever, is seeing Squidward genuinely enjoying time with SpongeBob and Patrick.
4. “Krabs Á La Mode”
Season 5, Episode 5
In “Krabs Á La Mode,” Mr. Krabs accidentally turns the Krusty Krab into an ice rink during the winter. Squidward is upset that Mr. Krabs lowered the thermostat to save money. To prevent anyone from turning the heat back on, Mr. Krabs sets an alarm.
When a cold snap hits, Mr. Krabs surprisingly transforms the Krusty Krab into an ice rink, offering special skates and fun activities. The sheer silliness of having an ice rink inside a burger restaurant is what makes this SpongeBob Christmas episode particularly memorable.
5. “Frozen Face-Off”
Season 8, Episode 4
The “Frozen Face-Off” is a winter sledding competition in Bikini Bottom with a grand prize of $1 million. SpongeBob gets help from Gary the snail, while Patrick decides gummy worms will power him to win. However, Squidward’s worm prefers to relax with a cup of tea instead of racing!
Everyone in Bikini Bottom is competing for a prize, but Plankton has his sights set on something else: stealing the Krabby Patty formula. When SpongeBob and his friends try to foil his plan, Plankton freezes them solid! Luckily, Sandy Cheeks is quick-thinking and builds a fire to thaw everyone out, wrapping up the episode with a heartwarming message about the importance of friendship and teamwork.
6. “It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!”
Season 8, Episode 23
Many fans consider “It’s a SpongeBob Christmas” to be the best holiday episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. The episode captures the excitement in Bikini Bottom as everyone anticipates Santa’s visit. However, Plankton, as usual, tries to spoil the fun by putting the entire town on Santa’s naughty list.
This episode is unique because it’s not animated in the usual style of SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas specials. It uses claymation, a technique similar to classic Christmas claymation shows.
7. “Out Of The Picture”
Season 10, Episode 10
In this episode, Squidward attempts to sell his artwork at the Krusty Krab, but Mr. Krabs stops him. Instead, Mr. Krabs sends Squidward to Antarctica to find a wealthy buyer for his paintings. While there, Squidward encounters a snow-covered sponge that resembles a snowman.
Surprisingly, SpongeBob had already arrived in Antarctica and was enjoying some ice when Squidward got there. This episode takes Squidward and SpongeBob to a snowy setting, a big change from their usual home of Bikini Bottom, and it’s a fun way to incorporate Christmas themes into the story.
8. “Shopping List”
Season 11, Episode 17
The episode “Shopping List” doesn’t feature typical winter fun like Santa or snowballs. Instead, it involves SpongeBob being tasked with a very difficult shopping list by Mr. Krabs, filled with hard-to-find items – and even a chilly yeti! Because SpongeBob is a bit timid, his friend Sandy steps in to help, particularly with the challenge of getting a yeti’s hair.
Okay, so Sandy and SpongeBob totally saved the day by fixing the Yeti’s hair – it was a pretty big deal! But, naturally, the Yeti wanted his hair back and eventually found them. It was wild because this whole thing brought a little bit of winter wonderland to Bikini Bottom, and honestly, it was amazing to see such a legendary creature pop up in our underwater town. As a movie lover, I was hooked!
9. “Goons on the Moon”
Season 11, Episode 26
In “Goons on the Moon,” Sandy leads her Science Scout troop on a lunar adventure. During their individual explorations, they discover a surprising sight: Santa Claus is asleep on the far side of the moon! When Santa realizes how distant Earth appears, everyone attempts to move the planet closer, but their efforts accidentally result in the moon’s destruction.
In a bizarre turn of events, Santa fills SpongeBob with water, transforming him into a temporary moon, and pledges to provide a real one next December. The show SpongeBob SquarePants has become increasingly strange over time, but this episode is notable for referencing SpongeBob’s previous meetings with Santa Claus.
10. “Plankton’s Old Chum”
Season 12, Episode 5
In “Plankton’s Old Chum,” Plankton comes up with a made-up holiday. Like many of his best schemes, the episode takes place at the Chum Bucket. Plankton needs to get rid of old chum and, after encountering SpongeBob, tricks him into believing it’s “Chum Day,” a holiday he presents as being like Christmas.
Today, someone gives away chum as a present. SpongeBob happily accepts it – it’s actually Plankton’s old chum – and spreads it all over Bikini Bottom. The townspeople get upset about the mess, but SpongeBob cleverly convinces them it’s a holiday, proving he can make any situation seem like a celebration.
