Every Returning ‘Star Wars’ Character and Creature in ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Trailer

As a huge fan, I was a little let down by the first peek at the new Mandalorian and Grogu movie, but the latest trailer? Wow, that definitely got me excited! We still don’t know exactly what the story is, but this trailer really shows how much bigger it is than the series, and it makes sense why they’re taking it to the cinema. It was also great to see so many familiar faces and creatures from other Star Wars films popping up!

The new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu promises a lot of familiar faces! The trailer features characters not just from The Mandalorian, but also from The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Book of Boba Fett, and even Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Rise of Skywalker, and the original Star Wars films. Plus, we’ll be seeing some returning alien species. Here’s a complete list of those characters and species featured in the trailer, excluding the main characters, Din Djarin and Grogu.

The Hutt Twins

Walt Disney Pictures

The Hutt Twins made their debut in The Book of Boba Fett. After Darth Vader wiped out the Hutt Council during the War of the Bounty Hunters comic storyline and Jabba the Hutt died in Return of the Jedi, the Twins seem to have taken over leadership of the Hutt family’s criminal organization. They had previously given up control of Tatooine and now appear to be operating from their original homeworld, likely the planet Nal Hutta.

Rotta the Hutt

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt, was last seen as a baby in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Over the past thirty years, since being saved by Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker, he’s grown into a powerfully built adult and is now working as a gladiator. He’s much more muscular than typical Hutts, and seems poised to be a formidable opponent in The Mandalorian. Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in The Bear, will provide the voice for Rotta.

Chess Piece Aliens

Lucasfilm

The gladiator arena alongside Rotta features several aliens that fans will recognize from the chess game played by Chewbacca and R2-D2 in Star Wars. These same aliens also appeared in The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. It seems the organizers of this alien fight club are recreating that chess match in real life, but the trailer suggests these creatures will eventually escape and cause chaos in the city.

Dragonsnake

Walt Disney Pictures

Just like Jabba the Hutt had a Rancor, the Twins seem to have a dangerous creature of their own: a Dragonsnake (written as one word). These large, snake-like beings live on swampy planets like Nal Hutta and Dagobah. A Dragonsnake first appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “The Hunt for Ziro,” where it nearly attacked Obi-Wan Kenobi. This suggests that much of The Mandalorian and Grogu might be set on Nal Hutta, and potentially its criminal moon, Nar Shada.

Hugo the Ardennian

Lucasfilm

In a scene from the new trailer, Din Djarin asks an Ardennian shopkeeper about a Hutt, which immediately causes the four-armed alien to shut down the store. Ardennians were first seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the character Rio Durant was voiced by Jon Favreau, who also directs The Mandalorian and Grogu. Interestingly, the Ardennian in the The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer is voiced by Martin Scorsese himself. Scorsese has a long-standing friendship with Star Wars creator George Lucas and previously worked with Favreau, casting him in The Wolf of Wall Street. The shop seems to be called “Hugos,” likely named after the owner and as a nod to Scorsese’s 2011 film, Hugo.

Anzellans

Walt Disney Pictures

Despite being a divisive movie for many Star Wars fans, The Rise of Skywalker was generally praised for introducing the Anzellan species, particularly the character Babu Frik. The Anzellans reappeared in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, owning a shop on the planet Neverro. These small aliens will be back in the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, and it looks like they’re helping Grogu save Din Djarin.

Zeb Orrelios

Lucasfilm

Garazeb ‘Zeb’ Orrelios was one of the first new characters introduced in the Star Wars universe after Disney bought Lucasfilm. He first appeared in the 2014 animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Zeb is a member of the Lasat species, which was originally envisioned by Ralph McQuarrie as a concept for Chewbacca. He later made a brief appearance in live-action form in Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Notably, Zeb Orrelios wasn’t in the Ahsoka series, even though it introduced live-action versions of many of his old teammates from the ship Ghost, like Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Chopper, and Ezra Bridger. With Zeb now joining forces with The Mandalorian, it seems likely we’ll see a full reunion of the Rebels crew either in the next season of Ahsoka or in a future movie that will connect the Disney+ shows. Steve Blum will return as the voice of Zeb.

Embo

Walt Disney Pictures

One of the most surprising moments in The Mandalorian and Grogu was the return of Embo, a bounty hunter from the Kyuzo species. He first appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “Bounty Hunters” back in March 2010. Originally, Embo was only meant to appear in that single episode, but Dave Filoni liked the character and decided to keep him in the series. He continued to appear throughout The Clone Wars, and plans for him to be in a canceled episode focusing on Boba Fett and Cad Bane now seem to be considered official Star Wars history thanks to The Book of Boba Fett.

It’s intriguing that Embo appears in The Mandalorian and Grogu considering his established backstory. Star Wars comics show he’d retired from bounty hunting by 9 ABY and was living on a farm on Felucia. His return to the profession, which happens just a few years after his retirement, raises questions. Is he working to pay off a debt to the Hutts, or is he seeking revenge against Din Djarin? Whatever the reason, Embo isn’t killed by the Mandalorian, as comic books confirm he’s still alive in 34 ABY, shortly before the events of the sequel trilogy.
