After the busy holiday season, January is usually a quieter month for movie releases, as many people are enjoying their new gifts and relaxing at home. While fewer movies come out in January, there are still some new releases worth checking out, and plenty of movie fans go to the theater all year long.
January is shaping up to be a great month for movie fans, especially those who love horror! We’ve got a long-awaited sequel, a wild monster movie, and the first big video game adaptation planned for 2026. But there’s plenty for everyone, with a diverse range of films hitting theaters. Here’s a complete guide to all the movies coming out in January, including special limited releases and anniversary showings.
‘Greenland 2: Migration’
In Theaters January 9
Five years after a comet devastated Earth, Greenland 2: Migration finds John Garrity (Gerard Butler) and his family – Allison (Morena Baccarin) and Nathan (Roman Griffin Davis) – leaving their bunker. Unable to continue surviving within its walls, they embark on a dangerous journey to find the legendary “Safe Haven,” facing a world filled with hardship and other survivors struggling to live.
The first Greenland movie came out during the pandemic, which gave it a particularly meaningful message. The sequel continues to address important environmental issues that many people are concerned about. What makes the Greenland series stand out is its fresh perspective – it shows us both the world before and after a catastrophic event. Greenland promises to be a thrilling and emotionally charged journey through a post-apocalyptic America that fans will love. Greenland 2: Migration will be released in theaters on January 9, 2026.
‘Primate’
In Theaters January 9
Okay, so I just saw “Primate,” and let me tell you, this isn’t your typical fun-in-the-sun vacation movie. It starts with a group of friends on what looks like a relaxing getaway, but things quickly go south when their pet monkey, Ben, gets attacked and starts behaving… aggressively. It’s a pretty terrifying turn of events, and honestly, it’s a solid horror flick. The director, Johannes Roberts – the guy who did “47 Meters Down” – clearly knows how to build suspense and deliver on the creature feature front. If you’re into that kind of thing, definitely check it out.
I’m really excited about this new horror movie, Primate! It’s already getting a ton of buzz from film festivals and has a fantastic 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What’s especially cool is that a lot of reviewers are praising how they used real, practical effects – not just CGI – to tell the story of a seriously mischievous monkey causing trouble for a group of friends. It’s the first big horror release of 2026, and I have a feeling Primate could be a surprisingly big hit. Mark your calendars – it hits theaters on January 9th, 2026!
’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’
In Theaters January 16
Following the success of 2025’s 28 Years Later, the next installment – 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – will continue the story directly after those events. While Nia DaCosta is potentially directing, Danny Boyle will still produce, and Alex Garland is back as the writer. Fans will be pleased to know that both Ralph Fiennes and Cillian Murphy are returning to their roles. With the original film earning $151 million globally, expectations are high for the sequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters on January 16, 2026.
‘Mercy’
In Theaters January 23
This futuristic thriller stars Chris Pratt as Detective Chris Raven. Once a supporter of using AI in the justice system, he becomes a target when he’s falsely accused of his wife’s murder. With only 90 minutes to clear his name before a guilty verdict is reached, Chris embarks on a thrilling and dangerous quest to find the real killer and prove his innocence.
The movie Mercy shares some similarities with Minority Report, but delivers a fast-paced, visually exciting thriller exploring the dangers of artificial intelligence. Starring Chris Pratt, this big-budget sci-fi film is sure to please fans of action-packed movies with impressive stunts and special effects. Mercy will be released in theaters on January 23, 2026.
‘Return to Silent Hill’
In Theaters January 23
Few game series are as loved and yet as often criticized as Silent Hill. The franchise, including its film adaptations, has experienced both successes and failures – the 2006 movie, while innovative, wasn’t a hit with audiences. However, the new film, Return to Silent Hill, is based on the highly-regarded game Silent Hill 2, and with the original director, Christophe Gans, returning, fans are hopeful it will recapture the series’ signature unsettling mood and thought-provoking themes.
If you’re unfamiliar with the series, the chilling psychological horror and unsettling atmosphere of Return to Silent Hill – following James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) as he searches for his partner in a monster-filled town – should be enough to grab your attention. The film arrives in theaters on January 23, 2026.
‘H Is for Hawk’
In Theaters January 30
The film H is for Hawk is a biographical drama that tells the story of Helen Macdonald (Claire Foy) as she copes with the death of her father. Overwhelmed by grief, Helen attempts to find solace by training a wild goshawk named Mabel. As she works to gain the bird’s trust, Helen embarks on a journey of self-discovery and begins to heal.
Inspired by Helen Macdonald’s popular 2014 memoir, the film H is for Hawk is a beautiful and moving story about overcoming grief and finding peace in nature. Early reviews have praised the film, especially Claire Foy’s performance, which powerfully portrays her character’s transformation through a connection with a hawk named Mabel. This sophisticated and well-made drama will be released in theaters on January 30, 2026.
‘Send Help’
In Theaters January 30
Okay, as a huge Sam Raimi fan, when I heard he had a new horror movie coming out, I was immediately in! It’s called Send Help, and it looks wild. The basic story is about a woman, Linda Liddle, played by Rachel McAdams, who ends up stranded on a deserted island with her absolutely awful boss, Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien) after their plane goes down. Apparently, it starts as a pretty typical office comedy, but quickly turns into a really intense survival thriller. I’m so excited – it hits theaters on January 30, 2026!
‘The Moment’
In Theaters January 30
If you’re loving the vibe of Charli XCX’s “Brat Summer,” check out her new movie, The Moment. It’s a funny and heartfelt mockumentary where she plays a version of herself, giving a peek behind the scenes of fame. Filled with her music, it’s a great celebration of pop! The film, directed by Aidan Zamiri (who’s known for their music video work), aims to capture the thrill of live music and will hit theaters on January 30, 2026.
