As a horror fan, I have to say the addition of Jason Voorhees to Dead by Daylight is a dream come true! The developers have really gone all-out with nods to Friday the 13th, packing the game with Easter eggs for fans like myself. And it makes sense – Dead by Daylight is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and they promised something special. They definitely delivered with this one!
As expected after a long, 13-hour broadcast, the developers revealed that Jason Voorhees, the famous horror villain, is coming to the game. This news has thrilled fans, who are eager to see what he’ll add to the gameplay.
Players got their first chance to play as Jason in Steam on May 26, 2026, and the response has been largely positive. People are really enjoying his abilities and find him fun to play. However, players quickly discovered this version of Jason includes some unique, new ideas.
Jason’s backstory within the game is deeply connected to the existing world of Dead by Daylight. He struggles against the Unknown before ultimately being captured by the Entity. What’s unique is that his in-game appearance features original designs, instead of simply copying his movie looks.
Despite these changes, the developers haven’t ignored Jason’s background. Each of Jason’s unlockable add-ons, which modify his abilities in different games, is actually a nod to kills and items from the Friday the 13th movies. Reddit user TheOneWhoWasDeceived discovered this neat detail, making it a fun Easter egg hunt for dedicated fans before the game’s release.
Friday The 13th Part II
As a big fan of the Friday the 13th films, I always get a kick out of the nods to the original movie in Dead by Daylight. There are a couple of add-ons that really bring back memories. One is called “Bent Wheel,” and it’s a brown add-on that references the really unsettling death of Mark. If you remember, Jason actually slams his machete into Mark’s face, which sends his wheelchair tumbling backwards down the stairs – it’s a truly iconic and terrifying scene, and the add-on is a cool tribute.
The purple “Deputy’s Badge” item is a reference to Deputy Winslow, the first officer to discover Jason’s cabin while pursuing the killer. He cautiously enters the cabin and is horrified to find the shrine dedicated to Jason’s mother. Jason then unexpectedly attacks him from behind, killing him with a hammer.
Friday The 13th Part III
Fans really loved the update that introduced Jason’s famous hockey mask. The add-on includes details referencing key moments from the films. “Knitting Needle” is a nod to Jason’s second kill, where he uses a knitting needle to attack someone at a convenience store. And “Eye Goop” refers to the first kill Jason commits while wearing the mask – shooting a harpoon through Vera’s eye.
The “Burnt Fuse” add-on references how Jason kills Chuck by shoving his face into a fusebox, causing electrocution and a power outage at Higgins’ Haven. A more subtle Easter Egg is the “Bloody Magazine.” If you look closely, you can see a small Godzilla on one of its pages, referencing the Fangoria magazine Debbie was reading right before she was attacked with a machete.
Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter
The Final Chapter is the sequel the developers clearly enjoyed working on the most, as evidenced by the five add-ons inspired by the film. It’s safe to say this movie is a particular favorite of the Dead by Daylight team, considering the amount of detail and references included.
The game includes references to characters who die in the Friday the 13th film. Axel and Robbie, the nurse and coroner from the opening scene, are honored with the “Orderly’s Shoe” and “Coroner’s Coffee” items. Crispin Glover’s character, George, also gets two items – “Missing Corkscrew” and “Two Nails” – which allude to how he’s displayed as a corpse near the end of the movie.
A final nod to the movie is the ‘Garden Claw,’ a reference to how Rob dies. Jason attacks Rob in the basement while he’s investigating, and Rob cries out, “He’s killing me!” Shortly after, Jason throws Rob through a window at the Jarvis house, with the garden claw impaled in his skull.
Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Many fans consider Jason Lives to be a standout film in the Friday the 13th series, and that’s reflected in the game’s content. Both of Jason’s most powerful upgrades, called Ultra Rare add-ons, are inspired by this movie. For example, the ‘Dirty Money’ add-on references a scene early in the film where Lizbeth tries to bribe Jason with money to save herself, but fails.
One of the movie’s most humorous scenes is recreated in an add-on featuring the “Bloody Smile.” In it, Jason needs his machete and quickly grabs a nearby paintball player who’s clearing brush, throwing him into a tree. The impact leaves a bloody handprint on a carved smiley face, referencing the scene’s name.
One of the most memorable and brutal kills in the film occurs when Jason boards an RV. He grabs a woman named Nikki and violently forces her face through the bathroom wall, leaving a horrifying impression of her scream behind.
The “Iridescent Boat Motor” is a hidden reference to how Jason dies in the movie Jason Lives. In the climactic fight between Jason and Tommy, Megan desperately starts a boat motor while Jason tries to drown her. Once she gets it going, she rams the motor into Jason’s head and keeps accelerating until his neck breaks and the water turns red with blood.
Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Though not as packed with nods to Friday the 13th: The New Blood as some other parts, Dead by Daylight still offers great Easter eggs for fans of the seventh film. One example is the “Sleeping Bag” kill, which references a famous scene: a camper trying to hide from Jason inside her sleeping bag is picked up, dragged to a tree, and killed with a single hit against the trunk.
Okay, so as a horror fan, one of the deaths that always stuck with me in the Friday the 13th series is the one they call “Party Noisemaker.” It’s just… unexpectedly bizarre. There’s this couple heading to the van, and Jason takes out the guy by, well, crushing his skull. But then, when the girl leans out the window, Jason shoves a party horn right into her eye! And it makes this ridiculous honking sound. It’s gruesome, but also… kind of darkly funny, and it’s definitely a memorable kill.
Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
The last horror movie Dead by Daylight references is Jason Takes Manhattan, the eighth film in the series. Although many fans consider it one of the worst sequels, the game still includes nods to its memorable kills through special items.
The scene known as “Sauna Rock” depicts a brutal killing. Jason enters a sauna and finds one of Julius’s sparring partners already lying there. He violently grabs a hot rock used for steam and thrusts it into the man’s chest, seemingly igniting his insides, before leaving him to die.
“Mirror Shards” refers to the way Tamara died on the cruise ship. Her attacker broke into the bathroom right after her shower, frightening her. He then shattered the mirror and used a piece of broken glass to stab her in the chest.
The last bonus feature highlights a particularly shocking kill from the series. In a desperate pursuit through New York City, Jason Voorhees captures Charles McCulloch after his friends have abandoned him. He then holds McCulloch over a barrel of toxic waste and drowns him in it – a truly gruesome and memorable scene.
The new Dead by Daylight chapter is generating a lot of excitement, and a big reason is the developers’ clear love and respect for the Friday the 13th franchise. They’ve gone above and beyond with references and hidden details, which is a fantastic way to introduce such a legendary horror villain to the game.
