Movies can be both popular and well-made, offering entertainment while also being intelligent and thought-provoking. When Event Horizon was first announced, most people didn’t have high expectations. It was a horror movie set in space, directed by a relatively unknown director who had previously made the Mortal Kombat video game film. At the time, any spaceship horror movie was immediately compared to Ridley Scott’s classic Alien, which set a very high bar. This comparison probably hurt Event Horizon when it came out, contributing to both its poor performance in theaters and negative reviews. Paul WS Anderson Wanted Event Horizon to Be Different From Alien

Following the huge success of his films, director Paul W.S. Anderson was a hot topic in Hollywood during the mid-1990s. Later known for the Resident Evil series, he jokingly explained to Variety magazine in 2022 that Hollywood has a quick turnaround: “When you have a big hit, everyone thinks you’re a genius, but one failure and they call you an idiot.” He was clearly enjoying his “genius phase” at the time.

Anderson’s success with the first Mortal Kombat movie led to immediate offers for sequels and other big projects. New Line Cinema wanted him back for Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and Fox offered him the chance to direct the long-planned X-Men film.

After directing a film based on pre-existing material, Anderson wasn’t interested in doing another one. He was eager to create something completely original, and he specifically wanted to explore a darker tone and build a unique world from scratch – something he hadn’t had the chance to do before.

Philip Eisner was intrigued when he received the script for Event Horizon, but recognized it needed revisions to stand out. The initial draft featured the crew of the rescue ship Lewis and Clark discovering the Event Horizon – a spaceship that vanished seven years prior and suddenly reappeared. They quickly find themselves threatened by monstrous, tentacled aliens who had eliminated the original crew.

Anderson believed the story could be great, but he recognized its resemblance to the film Alien – specifically, the idea of astronauts being hunted by a creature in a spaceship. To fix this, he significantly revised the script, changing the nature of the danger faced by Dr. William Weir (Sam Neill) and his team.

Anderson imagined a unique story where the villain wasn’t a typical monster. Instead, the spaceship itself was the danger, haunted by demonic spirits.

At the beginning of the story, we learn that Dr. Weir created the spaceship that had been missing in space for years. He tells the crew of the Lewis and Clark that the ship has a unique gravity drive. This drive can bend space and time, allowing the ship to instantly travel vast distances. Essentially, it creates shortcuts through space, letting it teleport at speeds faster than light.

Things take a disturbing turn when the Lewis and Clark receives a distress signal that sounds like the crew of the Event Horizon screaming in pain. A voice then speaks in Latin, saying “līberāte mē.” The ship’s doctor, D.J., translates this as “Save me,” immediately raising questions about where the Event Horizon has been for the past seven years.

When Miller and his team arrived, they didn’t find the crew alive. Instead, they discovered a scene of brutal violence. As they searched for anyone who might have survived, they began to have terrifying hallucinations, forced to confront their deepest fears and past mistakes. D.J. eventually figured out the distress signal’s Latin phrase was incomplete; the full message warned, “Save yourself from Hell.”

The crew discovered a video log revealing the horrifying fate of the Event Horizon’s original crew. It showed them descending into madness, engaging in extreme violence and self-mutilation. Disturbingly, the captain was seen holding his own eyes while chanting a terrifying phrase in Latin.

D.J. finally figures out what’s been happening, and his theory is terrifying. He thinks the spaceship’s drive didn’t just travel through space, but opened a door to another dimension. When it returned, something evil came back with it.

The nature of this strange, incomprehensible dimension is never directly explained, but it strongly suggests a realm of pure evil. This evil has taken hold of both the Event Horizon and now the Lewis and Clark ships, driving their crews to horrific violence and threatening to repeat the same tragedy.

The Event Horizon Ship Itself Is the Villain, and That Is a Stroke of Genius

What truly makes Event Horizon brilliant is Anderson’s choice to make the haunted spaceship itself the antagonist, instead of a traditional alien. The concept that the ship briefly entered a terrifying dimension – one so evil that it warps people into inflicting and experiencing horrific pain and degradation – is deeply unsettling and what the entire film relies on to be effective.

Furthermore, it raises many questions about religion, particularly the conflict between science and faith. These questions continue to captivate both fans and religious scholars even now.

If scientists, technologists, and logical thinkers were faced with evidence suggesting the traditional idea of Hell is actually real, would that lead us back to believing in superstition? How could we explain a technological advancement creating such a significant tear in reality that people end up in a place meant for the punishment of the wicked?

Okay, so the movie throws us into this utterly bizarre, nightmarish dimension – basically, Hell. But what really struck me wasn’t the visuals, it was how the characters reacted. They didn’t try to understand it with science or new ideas, they immediately fell back on old stories, on Biblical imagery. It made me wonder, is that a commentary on humanity? Are we simply incapable of grasping anything truly alien without framing it through the lens of ancient mythology? It’s a pretty unsettling thought, and it definitely stuck with me after the credits rolled.

With its many violent and disturbing scenes – actually even more intense in the original, longer version of the film – Event Horizon could easily be seen as just another excessively gory horror movie. Unfortunately, that’s how most critics reacted when it came out in 1997, missing the deeper meaning behind the shock value.

Even now, the film’s central concept continues to captivate audiences almost thirty years later, which speaks to the director’s willingness to take risks and create something unique. He understood that Event Horizon couldn’t simply compete with the most iconic movie monster of all time. Instead, he focused on building a film with surprisingly complex themes, alongside its intense and graphic visuals.

Event Horizon is a genuinely frightening film, and it’s definitely not for everyone. What’s particularly impressive is how ambitious it is, considering it was only the director’s third movie. Despite being a relatively new filmmaker, Anderson took a risk by creating a horror that doesn’t rely on a typical, easily defined monster. He aimed for something more unsettling – a haunting exploration of the characters’ painful histories and the deeply frightening idea of facing something beyond human comprehension.

Initially, Anderson’s bold vision for the film wasn’t well-received, but over time, its many fans have come to love it. That must be incredibly rewarding for him. He took a risk with his dark and unusual space story, and while it didn’t immediately succeed, he was ultimately vindicated in his creative choices.
